Thai chilis, or another spicy chili such as serrano. This is your source of heat, and for a truly authentic pad kra pao, you want to add as many as you can handle!

grams Fresh Flat Wide Rice Noodles (pre-cut, or cut noodle sheets into 1 to 1& 1/4-inch wide strands)

Table of contents

Onion: I used yellow onion, but red or white onion will work too. You could also use shallots instead if you like. Compared to Thai basil, holy basil has a fragrance that is less floral and more peppery; which is why it’s paired with very spicy dishes like pad kra pao or jungle curry. The aroma is always hard to describe, but trust me when I say the two smell quite different. Thai basil Plunkett-Hogge messages me from her home in northern Thailand, where she now runs a cookery school, to suggest a couple of variations: “Next time, replace fresh chillies with some dried red ones… it’s also excellent with some fresh green peppercorns thrown in.” Truly, this is a dish one could never tire of. The vegetables In a wok or a large saute pan, saute the garlic-chili paste in a little vegetable oil over medium high heat until the garlic starts to turn golden. Can I make this with pork, beef, or seafood? Thinly sliced pork scotch fillet, tenderloin, skinless pork belly, beef sirloin, or flank steak will all work well. You could also use shrimp or other seafood. Skip marinating the pork, beef, or seafood though, and add 1/2 tablespoon of fish sauce to the Pad Kee Mao Sauce. You’ll need 250 grams (8-9 ounces) of whichever protein you choose.

This makes them ideal for cooking dishes like pizza, pesto, pasta, spaghetti sauces and tomato salads. Use a different basil: Since Thai holy basil can be difficult to find depending on where you live, you can use Thai sweet basil or regular Italian basil instead. It does have a hint of cinnamon in its taste, which would make it a great addition to spice up the dish.g ground beef, regular or lean". Really? And while I'm aware that the recipe uses what seems like quite a lot of herb, 30 g still seem way overdone. Oil: I use canola oil, but any oil with a neutral flavor and high smoke point (i.e.: vegetable oil, rice bran oil, etc.) is great.

Thai Sweet Basil is more readily available within the EU because it is often grown in Spain or increasingly in Israel. (Currently available in Waitrose, grown in Israel & Ethiopia) The spicy Thai holy Basil is much less easy to grow outside of Southeast Asia (humidity?) and therefore is more difficult to obtain. I have noticed though that lately countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia are starting to export it to the EU. A consequence of this is that it is starting to become easier to obtain, particularly in Vietnamese stores. Many of these stores seem to have a once weekly delivery of fresh herbs so if you have such a store near you it could be worth finding out which day the delivery is due. Add noodles and sauce: Add the noodles and pour the sauce on top. Stir-fry until everything is evenly combined and coated well in the sauce.Thai Holy Basil also contains antioxidants that help to fight free radicals thereby helping maintain good health through fighting off many illnesses!
