Would have been 5 stars, but the outrageous coincidences which led to the denouement was a little too much, I thought.

As an inadvertent latecomer to the series, beginning with the tenth book, I cannot help but feel a tinge of regret for not delving into David Raker's world sooner. However, I am delighted to report that my newfound enthusiasm has led me to acquire the first book in the series. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to immerse myself in the earlier works and discover the depths of character and storytelling that I have been missing. And with his closest ally under arrest and about to reveal some truths of his own, the danger to Raker is coming from all sides . . . For example the story opens with the disappearance of a man and his nine-year-old son from the ghost house at a fun park. They’re seen queuing to go in and then entering the ghost house, but while customer both in front of and behind them in the queue safely leave the ride as expected, the man and his son never emerge and while some of their belongings are found inside there’s no sign of where they’ve disappeared to. The conclusion of the book was very clever and it left me wanting to read more about both David and Healy and perhaps some of the other characters. I've read most of the David Raker series and really enjoyed all of them so was thrilled to have the opportunity to read The Last Goodbye, number 12 in the series.

Family ties, love and loyalty are threads that also run through Exiles by Jane Harper, which also centres upon the mystery of a mother who vanished without trace. This is Raker 12. I’ve read them all and never got anywhere near the twists so this time I thought just relax and go with the flow and maybe that's the secret because this time I managed to figure out one small twist. Very proud of myself! Another thirty-two seconds pass and then the mother and her twins exit. One of the twins is crying. The mother tries to comfort them as they move out of shot. The tension builds throughout and as soon as I had finished it I was instantly looking forward to the next instalment.Weaver attended Norton Hill School [16] in Midsomer Norton, Somerset. He also describes himself as a "massive, massive football fan", [17] and supports Arsenal and Bath City F.C. Bibliography [ edit ] David Raker novels [ edit ] The fates of the two men are inextricably linked, although they vehemently deny any previous friendship. But while Healy stews behind bars, Raker has other fish to fry, courtesy of someone else we became acquainted with in the previous book. Rebekah Murphy is a Brit now living in New York – where the pair first met. She is in the UK to ask for Raker’s help to find her mother, who walked out of the family home in Cambridge nearly 40 years ago and vanished into thin air. Now Rebekah has started to receive condolence cards from her mother – or are they from someone else entirely?

In The Last Goodbye, David is hired by Rebekah who's mother upped and left when she was a small child, the other missing case which seems unrelated is a father and son who went into a ghost house and never showed up. And oh, that reveal at the climax! It is a masterstroke, carefully crafted and artfully interwoven throughout the narrative. One can sense Weaver's meticulous planning as the puzzle pieces fall into place, leaving readers both satisfied and in awe. The author's patience in developing this revelation over time rather than resorting to hasty resolutions is commendable and adds an extra layer of satisfaction to the reading experience.I’m a big David Raker fan and have read all of this authors previous books about as well as a stand alone which introduced Rebekah as a character. In this novel Rebekah and David come together as she hires him to look into her mother’s disappearance. Fiona Murphy walked out on Rebekah, her father and her brothers nearly 40 years earlier when Rebekah was 3. The Last Goodbye is the twelfth book in the David Raker series, but (in my opinion) it can easily be read as a standalone. This book is quite far into the David Raker series and I am ashamed to say that this is the first book in the series I have read, despite owning a few. I can safely say now that it won’t be my last! I do generally enjoy this ‘Missing’ series by the talented Tim Weaver and feel unlike some series’ every one can be read without reading any previous,in this book the basics of the past are mentioned to help new readers understand what has happened beforehand but tbh it holds it’s own as a good stand alone story Missing persons stories are a popular trope in crime fiction, as demonstrated so well by this series which has now reached book 12. Tim Weaver ploughs this particular furrow well, with a panache that reminded me of Before She Disappeared by Lisa Gardner. Both feature protagonists obsessively searching for those who are lost, with a compulsion drawn from past tragedy. This is a book with a rather ominous title and a compelling tale to tell. If you’re a David Raker fan, I suggest you grab a copy at the first opportunity.
