Mi Gu: Feng Jiu's housekeeper who previously served Bai Qian, Mi Gu holds the title of a Xian Jun and is a tree spirit. The last line of the story speaking of no further attempts at finding the city represent possibly that no one else is really interested in finding a utopia; society being dependent upon stagnant beliefs and conformity. With the social mandates and corruption in government during Chien’s life, he may be despondent in thinking that no one else is interested in enlightenment. The author’s state of mind may be of complete separation from anyone other than his family. Although Chien affirms that farming is not merely a vocation but a safeguard to reclusion, and therefore, constitutes his life and identity (Hermitary, 2002). Chien may be considered a recluse; he apparently did not view himself in this manner. Rather he preferred solitude and the loveliness and harmony of nature; giving up societal imprisonment. These little side-stories about several of the characters are particularly appealing; Ge also offers some annotations -- here presented as footnotes -- about the lives (and afterlives) of some of the characters, a nice little touch as well.) Xiumi had long suspected that while the world beyond held innumerable secrets, it consistently refused to to reveal any of them to her. What's interesting is that you, as the author - you only refer to this character by his American name from that point forward. Why is that? Why is he only Henry?

It turned out that Ji Heng used her father's life-saving grace against Dong Hua, asking him to divorce Feng Jiu and never marry. Dong Hua refused and cured Ji Heng's poison by transferring it to himself and returned her to her position as Princess of the Red Demon Clan, thus ending the debt. Dong Hua sent two letters with Chi Wu to tell the others to postpone the wedding and explain everything to Feng Jiu, but Chi Wu met with an enemy on the way and ended up in a coma for several months. Once Dong Hua knew, he rushed to find Feng Jiu, but at that time, the Hui Ming Realm began to collapse. Zhong Lin told Feng Jiu that Dong Hua had never reincarnated as a mortal, but had been preparing to purify the Hui Ming Realm. However, now he has chosen to stabilize it at the cost of his life. Zhong Lin then gave her the ring and said that it was made from half of Dong Hua's heart.Birch, Cyril. “From Early Times to the Fourteenth Century.” Anthology of Chinese Literature. Volume I. In its sweep and scope, it would appeal to fans of Madeleine Thien and Min Jin Lee and its lyrical voice - championing the vitality and ingenuity of the immigrant experience across three settings - confirms Melissa Fu as a writer to watch.' - Sharlene Teo Known for his elegant and artistic food plating, Chef Edward believes in giving new life to traditional dishes through innovative ingredients, culinary techniques and presentation. He draws fresh ideas from his daily surroundings and enlivens dining experience with his thoughtfully-curated menus. Inspired by his mother’s cooking, Chef seeks to serve up wholesome dishes like how a mother would for her son. A "beautifully rendered" novel aboutwar, migration, and the power of telling our stories, Peach Blossom Spring follows three generations of a Chinese family on their search for a place to call home (Georgia Hunter, New York Times bestselling author).

FU: He's on The final part of the novel begins with her transferred to yet another isolated place -- but not exactly one of great hardship: As 'the Principal' she tries to sets up all kinds of social services to better the lives of the locals in this town, but with only limited success. When she's somewhat recovered, her mother decides to marry her off; Xiumi is indifferent to this next step in her life -- perhaps for the best, since things don't turn out as planned or expected, and her life is derailed on the way to her groom, when she is kidnapped. It is 1938 in China and, as a young wife, Meilin's future is bright. But with the Japanese army approaching, Meilin and her four year old son, Renshu, are forced to flee their home. Relying on little but their wits and a beautifully illustrated hand scroll, filled with ancient fables that offer solace and wisdom, they must travel through a ravaged country, seeking refuge. Knowing that Feng Jiu wanted the Saha fruit, Dong Hua got her name into the list of competitors and in thanks, Feng Jiu rented out a restaurant to treat him. However, the next day, Feng Jiu found herself confined and Dong Hua told her that he did this so that he could train her for the tournament.

The leaps in time also leave gaps, notably as to her years in Japan, about which we learn almost nothing. Later at a banquet, Feng Jiu found out that Chang Di wanted to marry Xi Ze, but Dong Hua started to care more about Feng Jiu, causing her to wonder if he's been hexed. Jealous, Chang Di and Ju Nuo plotted to have everyone think that Feng Jiu was committing adultery with Mo Ye, but Dong Hua intervened. Zhong Lin: He is Tai Chen Palace's housekeeper. Despite his young age, Zhong Lin continued to serve Dong Hua is because he knew Dong Hua's heart best.Chien has some Confucian influence from very early in his life and the teaching in moral integrity and personal discipline helped form the basis for his dissatisfaction with corruption and his dedication to leading a simple life dedicated by his own attempts at personal discipline. In the story as the characters were making attempts to find the city again, “but grew confused and never found the way again” (Birch, 1965). Chien could be describing his own personal fear of finding utopia and losing it due to mystification. Another view of this passage could represent Chien’s own resolve that reclusion in life leads to utopia whereas taking another along can create confusion and the inability to attain a perfect state of being and way of life. Near the start of this part come the preparations for her marriage, and it also ends with her again about to be betrothed; this, too, does not work out. There's an ancient Chinese story first told by a poet more than a thousand years ago about a place called Peach Blossom Spring. It's a paradise full of peach trees bursting with clouds of blooms. A fisherman stumbles upon this magical place, which is removed from all the social and political problems his world is so familiar with, and he must decide whether to stay in this wondrous place or return to where he came from. Si Ming: Si Ming is the Chinese deity in charge of mankind's fate. Known as one of the two walking encyclopedia of Heaven, Si Ming loves to gossip. In the story, he was the only one who knew about Feng Jiu's time as Dong Hua's pet fox, and was also the only one who knew of her suffering during that time. Is it hinted within the story, as well as the drama, Eternal Love, that he is in love with her. Within every misfortune there is a blessing and within every blessing, the seeds of misfortune, and so it goes, until the end of time."

There's much here that impresses, and the narrative certainly carries the reader along, but Peach Blossom Paradise still comes across as somewhat disjointed. The two ended up at a valley and, thinking that Feng Jiu is Dong Hua's lover, Chi Wu started telling her about Dong Hua and Ji Heng, Dong Hua's former fiancée's, love story. The Second book began with revealing that the reason why Dong Hua appeared distracted the last few days was, because he was trying to find ways to get rid of Chi Wu without drawing blood, and later realized that he was in love with Feng Jiu.

Miao Luo: She is a demon created from the dark energy seeping out of the Hui Ming Realm. Dong Hua often has to meet with her whenever he comes to purify the Hui Ming Real. Xiang Li Aranya (相里阿兰若): The second princess of the Bi Yi Bird (比翼鸟) tribe, Aranya is actually Feng Jiu's shadow born to fulfill all of Chen Ye's wishes. After her birth, Aranya's mother threw her into the snake pit due to hatred for her father. Chen Ye was the one who told Aranya of her name, feeding her until she was out of the pit. Aranya had been in love with Chen Ye ever since, and never once had she forgotten his kindness to her. Spanning continents and generations, Peach Blossom Spring is a bold and moving story about the haunting power of our past, the sacrifices we make to protect our children, and one family's search for a place to call home. After a slow start, this majestic saga (Fu's debut) follows one family through 70 turbulent years (1938–2005) of Chinese history. In 1938, as the Japanese army closes in on China, meek widow Meilin becomes a formidable force when she must scrabble to simply feed her four-year-old son, Renshu. Soon the invasion forces them to flee their home, but Meilin's engaging personality, talent as a raconteur, and practical skills (sewing, cooking) sustain her during a perilous journey to Taiwan. Later, with his mother's blessing, Renshu goes to study in the States, eventually settling in Los Alamos, NM, with his devoted wife Rachel and daughter Lily. Despite Renshu's reluctance to recall his early life, Lily revels in all things Chinese. A lovely interlude brings Meilin to visit the U.S.; 20 years later, Renshu and Lily travel to Taiwan. Fu's novel is rich with fables, and narrator Eugenia Low's storytelling style is an ideal match. Low makes the characters and their accents beguiling and believable, particularly when voicing Rachel and Lily. VERDICT This gorgeous story was meant to be narrated. —Susan G.
