About this deal

I’ve concentrated on the new features for this review, as all of the standard features are just as you’d expect from Godox. All versions of the V860 III come with TTL, manual flash, high-speed sync up to 1/8000 second, rear-curtain sync, stroboscopic flash, flash exposure compensation, and autofocus assist beam for low lighting situations. They share the same battery which is fantastic for those wishing to build a complete lighting system with this brand. Even the menu design of the V860 III is similar to the V1, breaking away from the menu system on older Godox hardware. Value for Money

The new TTL/M switch, pictured here just above the thumb, enables easy switching between i-TTL and manual flash modes. (Image credit: Matthew Richards) Godox VING V860III: Build and handling The new V860 III pushes things further, with several new or improved features. Let’s take a look. In The Box Godox also offer the V1 flash with a round head. Slightly more expensive than the V860 III, it offers essentially the same feature set, except for the shape of the head. The V860 III offers a more traditional rectangular head, with a slightly smaller footprint, while the V1 offers a round head, compatible with accessories like those of the AD100Pro. The V1 does not cover as broad a zoom range as the V860 III, and does not include a bounce card nor a wide diffuser panel, requiring accessories for this. The flash can operate in high-speed synch, up to 1/8000 seconds (with a lower output power, just like any other flash). User Interface

The most talked-about feature is the front-facing 2W modeling light which can be adjusted in intensity from 1 to 10. Perhaps the only disappointment with this feature is the position of the lamp — it is on the flash body above the Godox logo, not on the flash head itself. Like almost all Godox products, the V860 III is also sold under the Flashpoint brand at Adorama in the US. Summary My first impression of the Godox V860 III flash was very positive. Taking the flash out of the box, I did notice that it was slightly larger and heavier than some other Godox flashes I’ve used. The extra weight is probably due to the new rechargeable Lithium ION battery: the V860 III weighs in at 18.7oz (530g). The zoom head covers 20-200mm and will zoom automatically (it can be widened to 14mm by using the wide diffuser). Its guide number (GN) is 60m (197 feet) at ISO 100 and 200mm. GN is a bit misleading, and it is often more interesting to compare output power. The V860 III can output 76W of power, similar to the company’s V1 although lower than the 100W of the AD100Pro. The build quality of the Godox V860 III is excellent. The flash feels sturdy and more durable in the hand than some smaller flashes. Having said that, I’ve never had any issues with the build quality of any Godox equipment. Specifications

The V860III can be used as a controller for three other groups of flashes - even if it’s not being used as a flash itself. As a transmitter, the V860III can trigger the V1, the AS200 Pro, and the AD 300 Pro. As a receiver, the V860III can be triggered by the X1, X2, Xpro, and the V1. Used as a dedicated flash, there is little to separate this from Sony’s offering but at half the price, and the same goes for the other manufacturers. Of course, this is no ProFoto A1 or Nikon SB-900 of Canon EL-1 this is very much mid-range. Those flashguns are at the next level up, but for most enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers, the Godox VING V860III SPEEDLIGHT will provide you with the quality of illumination you need. The final big feature is the wireless control, the Godox VING V860III SPEEDLIGHT is shown to work with the X2, but in this review, I’ve been using it with the older X1 wireless trigger with good results. The flash follows the traditional boxy hotshoe design and is available in dedicated fits for most of the major brands, including; Canon, Sony and Nikon; I’ve looked at the Sony version in this review.Another feature I like in this model is channel scan — this gives more reliable results in crowded places where other equipment might be using Wi-Fi. The flash scans all channels and chooses one that no one else is using - very clever. V860 III Versus V1 The main limitation of the Godox system is that each flash uses a slightly different user interface. I personally use the V860 III, the T350 (a compact, easy to carry flash), an AD100Pro and the X2T trigger. Each offers the same options, but the buttons are always positioned differently, and operation has to be re-learned each time. When using the flash on-camera, this is moot as it will often be used in TTL. When using it remotely, it’s simpler to just use a trigger and only have that to learn. Godox V860III Compared With Other Options Thirdly, there’s the AC charging cable and charging plate for the battery. Finally, there’s the hot shoe plate quarter-inch plate adapter for attaching the flash to lighting stands. First Impressions and Build Quality For event photographers and those who use on-camera-flash in fast-paced environments, these updates, especially with the low cost, will be more than welcome.
