Skulduggery author, Derek Landy on the accidental reveal of the ending of his new book". Irish Examiner. 25 March 2021. In June 2011 Landy posted on his blog that he would be writing a short story about Skulduggery called The End of the World. [29] It was released in late February 2012 to coincide with World Book Day 2012. The Australian release of this novella came with an additional short story titled Just Another Friday Night. Deleted scenes from Skulduggery Pleasant were included. It is set a few months after Death Bringer. It was included in the 2014's short story collection. The new Skulduggery book 14 Dead or Alive was released in April 2021 and an illustrated compendium The Skulduggery Pleasant Grimoire in May 2021.

The Lost Art of World Domination: (1–2) Set after Skulduggery Pleasant, Scaramouch Van Dreg manages to capture Skulduggery Pleasant. Originally included in Skulduggery Pleasant. Landy, Derek (April 2021). Dead or Alive: Book 14 (Skulduggery Pleasant). HarperCollins. ISBN 978-0008386290. a b Shortall, Eithne. "Skeleton detective Skulduggery Pleasant launches new assault on America". The Times. ISSN 0140-0460 . Retrieved 3 June 2021. It is exhausting to read this book because I feel like the rushed pace and slapdash editing really makes it impossible to examine it based on the actual story. idk! idk. I had fun! that counts for something! but these books *need* more time. and more people reading the drafts! In ye olden days of Phase 1, Derek’s best friend read every book before publication and fans eagerly awaited the tweet or blogpost saying she had finished. She didn’t mince words and would explicitly tell Derek what she didn’t like (she was on record as disliking the zombies and convincing Derek to alter the scene between China and Fletcher in DD.) Derek says she hasn’t done that for phase 2.... and I wonder if now being surrounded like yes men like his editor is hurting his creative process. The novels are broken up into two phases with multiple prequels and short tales. Since the release of the first novel in 2007, Skulduggery Pleasant, the series has been praised by both readers and critics.Derek Landy delivers the deliciously spine-tingling conclusion to the second cycle of his hugely popular series” - Waterstones, Best Books of the Year 2022

Just Another Friday Night: (5–6) Sometime before Death Bringer, Tane Aiavao and Hayley Skirmish meet with a cursed family. The End of the World: (6–7) Set after Death Bringer, Skulduggery and Valkyrie attempt to solve a mystery surrounding Deacon Maybury, Ryan and the Doomsday Machine. Skulduggery Pleasant is a series of dark fantasy novels written by Irish author Derek Landy. Tom Percival is the series' illustrator. The books revolve around the adventures of fledgling detective Valkyrie Cain and her mentor Skulduggery Pleasant, along with other friends and allies. The central story concerns Valkyrie's struggle to stop evil forces threatening the world and her internal struggle to resist the darkness within. Hugely enjoyable - a thrill-a-minute adventure.' Jonathan Stroud, author of the BARTIMAEUS TRILOGY -I had very mixed feelings about this book. For one, nostalgia for a once great series I used to read/listen to on repeat. On the other hand however, there was this descend into chaos I already noticed increasingly in the other novel of the second era. There were some ideas and themes I liked, others I didn't enjoy as much. But altogether, I felt there was just too much going on with too little time and setup. I feel like some plot elements would have profited from the book either being longer or - even better - not setting up as much in one book. One negative point throughout the second era for me also was how Derek Landy keeps pulling lore from Skulduggery's past without proper setup and in huge quantities. I realise the guy's centuries old, but I always enjoyed his past being somewhat of a mystery and feel like other reveals - notably, for example, the Lord Vile reveal in the first era - were much more planned out than all the revelations of Skulduggery's and other character's pasts and relationships/family trees. I did like the reveal that Omen was Sebastian all along but again, it felt a bit rushed. And my heart did melt quite a bit at the return of Ghastly Bespoke. I had hoped there would be more scenes with Skulduggery's siblings, as they seem like very intelligent fellows, with the same sarcastic and stupid humour as Skulduggery does. Peccant being Skulduggery's brother surprised me, but I guess Landy will just make up new stuff as he goes along. And contrary to the earlier books, the ending wasn't predictable; no, contrary to that, it caught me by surprise, as I had expected Landy to kill everyone off in some stupid nuclear event.

I think this messy and convoluted book, both amazes and annoys me, as Landy manages to play 4D chess, and at the same time, he introduces plotlines and characters who don't have any relevancy to the plot at all.A spin-off novel featuring Tanith Low taking place between the seventh and eighth books was released on 28 March 2013 in the U.K & Ireland and 1 April in other countries. The cover and title ( Tanith Low in... The Maleficent Seven: From the World of Skulduggery Pleasant) were released on 7 December 2012 after several delays, with Landy stating it to be his favourite book cover ever. There was also at least one instance where the wrong character name was used at the start of a scene, which made the rest of the scene very confusing, so a final proofread from an editor or beta reader would’ve been helpful.
