About this deal

In a brand new collection of stories and poems, Alfie has a spooky late-night adventure with an owl and introduces us to his secret den in the garden.

Tiny pen-and-ink drawings sparkle in the margins of this meandering fantasy about a lonely girl and a statue that springs to life.

My point there, and one which applies here as well, was that the visual literacy needed to read and appreciate comics is massive - and it all contributes towards becoming literate. As he checks out the prizes -- a dinosaur book, a jigsaw puzzle, and a bottle of green bubble bath -- he spots a. Alfie and Mum love to tell stories together, to explore and have adventures -- over fields, across streams, and even into big dark houses! I have distinct memories of my sister asking for Alfie Gets in First as a bedtime story on numerous occasions.

It is beautifully done, capturing the small boy in the shift - the actual moment - where he starts to panic a little bit. With warmth and sturdy common sense, these attractive picture books introduce the verbs ``to give'' and ``to bounce. Her books include the wordless picture book Up and Up, collection of rhymes and poems Out and About, and for the very young The Nursery Collection. The verso(left) page tells the story of the increasingly active outdoor narrative, whilst the recto (right) page tells the story of Alfie, inside. I like this group, in part because it's a nice look at how children grow up in Great Britain - which really isn't all that different (except for the language used sometimes) than life in the United States. In a sequel to Alfie Gets in First and Alfie's Feet, Alfie goes to his first birthday party all by himself, clinging to his blanket. Shirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for Dogger in 1977 and for Ella's Big Chance in 2003. In Alfie Gets In First, a window cleaner nearly saves the day by climbing up his ladder to let himself in an open window. For teachers, it is important to have a discussion along with this book about how Alfie got himself into the situation and thinking about your actions before doing them. There's also a couple of other titles like Sally's Secret, and The Trouble With Jack, Moving Molly, and lastly Rhymes For Annie Rose (another of my favourites!

Even for those who cannot read, the brilliance of Hughes’ illustrations provide all the information a child may need to understand a rough storyline. The children know all the people up and down their street, and theirs is a friendly world--when a neighbor, Mrs.Despite some scepticism from Alfie, who would have preferred to play with Bernard at home, they deliver their goodies to Great-Grandma Hilary who turns out to be much more exciting than they had expected. In the book Alfie a young child ran into his house without his mom and ended up locking himself in the house. Why should the everyday tales of a four-year-old boy and his toddler sister Annie Rose so lift my spirits - as well as those of my two young children - at the end of a dog-tiring day? Fans of the other Alfie books and those meeting the family for the first time will be pleased by the real-life situations, jauntily depicted in Hughes's fresh-faced watercolors. Now I really want to give some of my favourites to my Godchildren however I cannot seem to find an age rating for this book.
