About this deal

In Hamlet, Revenge! (1937), part III, chapter one, mystery writer Michael Innes places Bath Olivers among the standard amenities of a country house bedroom in the 1930s. As the house steward explains to Inspector Appleby, "Two Bath Olivers, two Richtea, and two digestive in every room. Replenished daily and changed three times a week. The Bath Olivers go to Mr Bagot [the butler]—he has a Partiality for Them—and the others to the servants' hall." Now that you have got your ingredients all sorted out, we can get on with the recipe. Follow these steps and you will have no problems baking a batch of your very own Bath Oliver biscuits.

Mr McCrea told the Evening Post that Huntley & Palmers now had negotiated the rights to make the biscuits and had the recipe and the all-important chocolate formula. Try them at…The Thoughtful Bread Company. Duncan Glendinning’s own version of Bath Buns are made in his sustainable bakery in the basement below the Barton Street café. There are also some great lunches and other sweet treats on offer!

Bath Olivers, one of Britain’s favourite biscuits has been granted a reprieve, as production has restarted following an outcry over their disappearance. The McVities’ team and I worked 24/7 for 29 straight days to make sure we made something spectacular, and that met Prince William and Kate’s brief.” The popularity of Oliver’s, as they were known, outlived the good doctor himself: as a rare yeasted biscuit, they found a new audience in the 19th century, when they were held to be “good for invalids suffering from acidity of the stomach, for which yeast is a corrective”. By 1907 many versions were produced in Bath, but only the Green Street bakery set up by Oliver’s former coachman could claim to use his original recipe.

Bake the dough for about twenty-five minutes, until the dough is brown and crisp. Make sure to rotate the oven trays halfway through. But, a spokesman said: "We're pleased to report that production of Bath Oliver biscuits continues as usual. In March, referring to a letter in his paper lamenting no longer available delicacies Frank Johnson of the Daily Telegraph wrote: “I would like to add the Chocolate Bath Oliver, once made by the great old British firm of Huntley & Palmers at Reading (now taken over) – the world’s greatest chocolate biscuit.”On his death, Dr Oliver granted the recipe to his coachman, Mr Atkins, who set up shop in Green Street, though they’re no longer made in the city but available at most supermarkets. Chocolate Olivers, however, are a delicious alternative. They have been sorely missed and were the favourite nibble of many, including ex-Beatle John Lennon, who once famously refused to accept his fee for an appearance on BBC music show The Old Grey Whistle Test in cash, insisting instead he should be rewarded with Chocolate Bath Olivers. Cut the rolled dough into circular shapes that are about 8 cm in diameter. Place them on wetter oven trays.
