About this deal

The FA Cup is a competition engrained in the Club’s history, with the most famous victory coming against Arsenal in 1992. He first moved to Wrexham in 1977 where he embarked on one of the best goalscoring runs in FA Cup history. In total he managed eleven goals in the competition after scoring twice in both the 4th round games with Newcastle United, Wrexham winning 4-1 at the Racecourse after a 2-2 draw at St James Park.

And with Wrexham's 2022/23 campaign kick-starting this weekend, McNeil expects to see another professional performance in the North East on Saturday. When you were at Hereford United, you were top goalscorer of all four divisions of the Football League for two seasons in a row (1974/75 and 1975/76). His league career started in earnest at Exeter City, but ground to a swift halt at the end of the 1966-67 season.

Phil Parkinson’s men go into tomorrow’s game in a strong vein of form, winning eight of the last ten matches. We went into the dressing room and had a chat, but when we walked out to look at the pitch, I don’t think anyone could quite believe there were 40,000 people inside the stadium. Making his debut against Wrexham, where he was later a great success, on 20 August 1966 he went on to score eleven goals in his only season at St James' Park. He then played non-league football at Corby Town as a part-timer, before being signed by neighbouring Northampton Town, where he played for three seasons and scored against the mighty Manchester United in a cup match.

It’s been 44 years since Wrexham last played Spartans in the competition, with goals from Graham Whittle and McNeil proving to be the difference in the replay.

You scored the all-important equaliser against Blyth Spartans and also the winner in the replay which was played at Newcastle’s St James’s Park. Speaking on the goal, he said: “It was one of those crazy things and it was fate at the end of the day. The magic of the Cup was a spell McNeil still conjured up with goals against Tottenham, Chelsea and Brian Clough’s European Cup champions Nottingham Forest - as well as a third round third replay winner over West Ham.
