About this deal

Jenny McLachlan is the author of several acclaimed teen novels including Flirty Dancing, Stargazing for Beginners and Truly, Wildly, Deeply. Before Jenny became a writer, she was Head of English in a secondary school; she now loves visiting schools as an author and delivering funny and inspiring talks and workshops. When Jenny isn't thinking about stories or writing stories, she enjoys living by the seaside, cycling and running over the South Downs. The Land of Roar is Jenny's middle-grade debut. A middle-grade fantasy that will make you believe in magic! Arthur and Rose enter the imaginary world, the 'Land of Roar', by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. The Land of Roar

Yet it continues to captivate us. And rightfully so! Whether we were raised on a series of unfortunate events, or a progression of mysteries we had to solve with Frank, Al, Chet or Nancy, or even figuring our way thru a phantom tollbooth or bridges destined for failure, WE made it thru.

Looking for something different

Now they are 11, Rose spends hours on her phone and worries about fitting in and Arthur, despite the scar on his wrist where he was bitten by a dragon, has almost forgotten about Roar. But then a mysterious figure appears at the attic window, an old map turns up, and Grandad vanishes... The Land of Roar is a fun-filled adventure book for middle-graders set in a magical world filled with mystical creatures, some good, some evil. The residents of Roar have been waiting for the twins to return to the land as Crowky the Magpie has taken over and the world is being destroyed. The Land of Roar is perfect for children aged 8 to 12, and can sit on their bookshelf next to Nevermoor, Wizards of Once and How to Train Your Dragon. Readers can bring their fantasy world to life and meet dragons, unicorns, mermaids and more in this beautifully illustrated children's book. The new middle-grade fantasy that will make you believe in magic! When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. Roar was filled with things they loved – dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure – as well as things that scared them (including a very creepy scarecrow. . .) Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar . . . real? 'The Land of Roar' is reminiscent of 'Peter Pan', 'The Neverending Story' and 'Jumanji' – perfect for readers of 'Nevermoor' and 'Wizards of Once'.

As I’ve mentioned above, this book would be great for a younger class because of the fantasy elements and accessibility, and yet would still fit in brilliantly with an older class, meaning it’ll likely find itself being passed between many children. Thankfully, Egmont put a great deal of effort into printing The Land of Roar properly; the book feels solidly built and should hold up well in a classroom. Twins Arthur and Rose have found as they have gotten older that they are growing apart, Arthur is still quite young and wants to play games and be a child, Rose wants to act like a teenager and has no interest in anything except her phone, which she is on constantly. Arthur is not sure what to make of their game, could it have been a real place they went to or was it all in his imagination? His sister Rose knows it was all made up and refuses to even think about the possibility that it might not have been in their heads, she is more concerned with her new phone and the teenage girl next door. This is proof, not that it's needed, that Jenny McLachlan is a writer of enormous heart and versatility. I'm a really big fan' Phil Earle, award-winning author of Being Billy and co-author of Get Me Out of Here! with Andy McNabHowever, while clearing out the attic at their grandad's house they stubble upon the old camp bed that was the entrance to the land or roar, Arthur and Rose find out their imaginary world may not have just been in their minds... The descriptions of the characters are vague enough so that any child can picture themselves in the story, which I love. When I did NOT love was the tiny font size in this book. FOR: Curriculum objectives, comprehension questions and extra activities including mermaids and ninja wizards, drama and role play, diary writing, creating sensory poems, designing and writing about magical lands, learning about world-building and the fantasy genre, and more

The brother and sister relationship between Rose and Arthur shows the natural ups and downs all siblings go through, and therefore feels realistic and relatable to children reading the book. This is great for children who may themselves be going through a bad patch with their siblings, as it shows that through all their differences exists an unbreakable bond. The familial bond is extended through to their grandad, who also features in the book. As little old man with asthma, keeping the magic of childhood alive and looking after the grandchildren, he reminds me of my own grandad. From the books I’ve read, it seems fairly uncommon to have siblings and a grandparent both feature, as they’re often built around a single child facing ‘the hero’s journey’ alone, and so it was refreshing to read. The wins go on an epic adventure to take on their old foes and reunite with their old friends in a daring rescue attempt. The first in a new children’s fantasy adventure series, full of imagination, humour and heart, and with echoes of Peter Pan, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Neverending Story and Jumanji. It is a great book to read. Full of fun and imagination. The Land of Roar is truly a special place! Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar ... real?
