About this deal

The story begins in 1919, post-WWI England, in my own city of Norwich (I don't actually own it, I just live here). There is no place for any kind of embellishment when people are killing each other every day and every hour. Palace of Versailles, former French royal residence and centre of government, now a national landmark. The Enlightenment also helped stir open debate on the problem of serfdom—the feudal practice forcing peasants into indentured servitude to the lords of estates. He moved the capital to Saint Petersburg, where his royal palace was meant to imitate and even rival King Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles.

There are many gutting scenes, not the least of which, is the stunning revelation about Will’s fate that Tristan divulges towards the end of the novel. The feelings of death, of love, of loneliness are all brought forward in the characters of Tristan and Will. Charles III, king of Spain (1759–88) and king of Naples (as Charles VII, 1734–59), one of the “enlightened despots” of the 18th century, who helped lead Spain to a brief cultural and economic revival. Bestseller and was adapted for a feature film, a play, a ballet and an opera, selling around 11 million copies worldwide.

It is easily one of the most beautifully written, emotionally gripping books I've read this year, and perhaps in some time.

Weber's response to the divergent outcomes of absolutism in Eastern and Western Europe was to portray what happened in the East as a delay rather than a regression, and to explain it as the result of the state's lack of allies in the wider society, which in turn reflected the more general economic and cultural backwardness of these societies. The Great War is only a background because the story is about the ambiguous morality and the ambivalence of deportment. To impose rigid uniformity in such a situation was both impossible and undreamed of by contemporaries. It depicts a relationship between two soldiers, Tristan Sadler and Will Bancroft, the latter of whom gravitates towards being the most extreme form of conscientious objector, refusing any role at all in the campaign: an absolutist. All these factors make it clear that a situation simply did not exist in which totalitarian government, at least by 20th-century standards, could have had any meaning.Absolute monarchs are also associated with the rise of professional standing armies, professional bureaucracies, the codification of state laws, and the rise of ideologies that justify the absolutist monarchy. Thus, in religious matters (except where Jansenism was concerned), in his dealings with the nobility and the Parlement, in his attitude toward the economy, and in his manner of governing the country, Louis revealed a desire to exercise a paternal control of affairs that might suggest a modern dictator rather than a 17th-century king. the cruel images of youth destroyed in War, the suppression of human love in its expanse of forms, and the staining words spat out that pierce the soul and forever change the psyche of the intended target. Norfolk (literally meaning North people), shares the bulge on the east of England, known as East Anglia with it's southern neighbor - Suffolk (South people).
