About this deal

Part your hair down the middle and divide it into four sections: two behind your ears, and two in front of your ears. Make sure your hair is completely dry. Putting a hot iron on damp hair can seriously damage it — not because the iron is too hot, but because the water will turn to scalding steam. Play it safe, and completely dry your hair first. Run a blowdryer over any damp spots. Start with damp hair. You can either spritz your hair with a spray bottle, or let it partially air dry after you wash it. If your hair is particularly resistant to curling, try skipping the conditioner after shampooing. This will make sure your hair isn't too soft for the roller to get a good grip on the hair. [5] X Research source Some curling irons will have a clamp near the handle. If this is the type of curling tongs you're using, open the clamp and position the end of the hair at the lower end of the barrel, near the handle, then close the clamp to secure. Then you can wrap that entire section of hair around the iron, by rolling the iron upwards towards your roots. Stop rolling when you get about an inch away from the roots, to prevent the iron from burning your scalp.

Another rule is co-washing (short for conditioning wash), meaning zero shampoo and only using conditioner. Unsurprisingly, it’s a hot topic of frustration on forums for those following the original CGM (which has since been updated as many modern shampoos now omit sulphates).

Choose a loose hold hairspray so your curls aren't too stiff and you hair doesn't feel too "crunchy". Hold the can about 12-14 in (30.5 cm - 35.5 cm) away from your head and spray evenly around your head. Be careful not to apply too much. [3] X Research source

Start with slightly damp hair. If your hair becomes frizzy when left to dry naturally, apply a product for smooth air drying. Shape: consider what kind of curls you want - tight ones, loose waves, funky waves, whatever you want, you need to make sure the barrel of your wand will create your go-to look. Heat up the curling iron. Most curling irons will need about 1-5 minutes to heat up before you can use them. If you try to curl your hair with the iron before it reaches the correct temperature, the curls will not hold. Once you've gutted your curly arsenal of sulfates, silicones and alcohols (more on what's banned below), you've likely found yourself with little left. Here's where it gets fun, but it does take some time. You'll want to experiment with a variety of product combinations until your get your ideal mix. Here are the products you'll want to have on hand for most success with the Curly Girl Method: I expect Lorraine Massey never intended her helpful method to be taken to the extremes that it has! Yes, gentler handling and care of naturally curly and textured hair is something we certainly support, but remember this was written more than 20 years ago – we’ve come a long way since,” says Claire Shread, co-founder of Umberto Giannini. It fully depends on your hair type, texture, and the look you’re going for (e.g., a protective style doesn’t require a gel cast and won’t necessarily use the same application method as a wash and go or). But if you’re going for the gel cast, you'll need a lot of gel—like a huge handful of gel for fine, shoulder-length hair. Coat your hands with gel then rake and scrunch it through your soaking-wet hair section by section (here’s a gel cast tutorial I love, if you need a visual). Once the rollers are out, you can brush out the curls to loosen them. Just don't overdo it, your curls should keep their shape for two or three strokes, but overdoing it might cause them to fall out. Ultimately, your hair has different needs to someone else’s – it’s affected by everything from chemical processes to age. While younger curls may require minimal extra care but maximum freedom to experiment, hair can get more challenging over time – something the original Curly Girl Handbook perhaps overlooked in 2001.
