The IE 200 and IE 300 are both great IEMs that are priced in a generous way. I wish there was a space for both of these IEMs to exist, but only the IE 200 is readily available, and it’s not a bad trade-off at all. I think the IE 200 is a worthy upgrade from the IE 300, but there are some aspects of the later that you may personally prefer. When I first saw the IE 300 images I wasn’t really a fan of the color scheme, but in reality they actually look really nice. The actually remind me of the HD600 headband for some reason. Design wise I feel the IE 300 is a hit. They are small, nicely rounded and very small. Admitted, it’s all very plastic-like but it doesn’t bother me at all. Sennheiser’s IE series has been quite the powerhouse in the world of IEMs. The new IE 200 is the latest set of earphones from them that made a big impression on me, even more impressive when you see the price. Its strongest comparison would be the IE 300, Sennheiser’s former iteration of a budget-fi IEM that is now off the market. Of course, there are still ways to get the IE 300, but the new IE 200 is meant to be the logical upgrade to the IE 300, but there will always be specific characteristics that some will prefer. Here are some of the differences and similarities you can expect from the IE 200 and IE 300. What You Get Listening to Fountains from Jogging House’s 2019 release Lure, the gentle fading in and out of each nuanced timbre appeared more distinct than ever before, but never to the point of feeling apart from the arpeggio bed and other textures that make up the ambient composition. These earphones use a form-retaining hook that runs over your ears, avoiding snags pulling the earpieces out. You get silicone and foam tips in the box, and I recommend opting for the foam ones if you have any trouble with the fit.Let’s set the stage appropriately before we go into sound details. This is the replacement for the ie80s with its tunable bass and is not a pure reference in-ear. Those looking for this to be the ruler flat frequency response of a true reference can quit reading now. This is a shallow V with emphasis in the sub-bass and lower treble ranges much like its predecessor when set to its most bass heavy setting. The good news is it distorts less than the ie80s on its most bass heavy setting and has more detail comparatively.

The build quality is excellent and with the soft, round edges the IE 300 looks comfy, high end and professional. As said, the Sennheiser IE 300 has a very plastic look at feel, but it’s actually very well built. The issue with the silicon tips may be a result of a slight warping of their shape, which was the state we found them in out of the box, but this is likely to be an experience that varies user to user, as is often the case with in-ear fit. The mid detail is there – it isn’t as soft as a pancake as it is in some lower-end earphones. But the choice to emphasise the treble and bass leaves the mids noticeably recessed in comparison to other similarly competent pairs.

Right now, as I type this, I’m listening to the IE 900 playing Brian Eno’s An Ending (Ascent) both because I have a mild flair for the dramatic and because it contextualises where this headphone sits in the wider scheme of things. This is among the last, if not the last domestic Sennheiser product we’ll see before the new ownership arrangement starts to make itself felt. On the one hand, there’s a degree of sadness to this because, not only is the IE 900 the best earphone Sennheiser has made, it might well be the single best thing of the company's I’ve ever tested (it’s a three way tie between this, the original IE800 and the PXC550). If this is an ending, it is truly going out on a high. Like with many of Sennheiser’s IEMs utilising the Helmholtz resonator technology that first popped up in the original IE800, the IE300 has a boosted treble response that is simultaneously sharp yet restrained enough not to fall into sibilance or harshness. Again, the IE300 has a treble that is decidedly north of neutral so those sensitive to higher frequencies should stay away regardless, but this has always been Sennheiser’s strong suit in the IEM game so it’s good to see that they’ve at least maintained it. The ensemble includes two violins, one viola, and one cello that are joined by a lute for this selection. I could easily distinguish each instrument clearly on the IE 300, which produced a delicate, well-balanced, open sound.

Dynamic range is also very decent, impressive even, with the IE 300 able to articulate subtle nuances and sudden bursts of volume in equal measure. When Hans Zimmer’s Mountains bursts into life at the 2-minute mark, the emotion communicated through the crescendo is palpable, while all the subtle details and effects in and around the main strings and piano strikes are clean and clear. Likewise, I was impressed by how the build-up to Max Richter’s Winter 1 wasn’t totally obscured, with subtle cues in the opening string instruments loud enough to enjoy, even at lower volume. The IE 300 make a great first impression, producing the depth of bass, frequency-wide solidity and general scale of sound that is hard not to be impressed by from such tiny units. We play Mogwai’s Ceiling Granny and there’s meat and grubbiness behind the oppressive guitar lines, not to mention hefty sting to the blistering electric squeals. The Sennheiser’s low-end weight, which isn’t particularly agile but not exactly ponderous either, can really anchor a song that warrants it in ways earbuds rarely do, such as LNZNDRF’s Barton Springs At Dusk. Sennheiser’s IE 300 wasn’t exactly what I expected it to be coming into this review. Everything I’d heard about it to that point was prefaced on it being the ‘baby brother’ of the more mature IE 900, but aside from the name and obvious family resemblance, I don’t think the IE 300 really lives in the same city, let alone neighbourhood.

For the first week or so I used the silicone tips, and was never quite sure if the seal was quite right. No such problem with the foam tips. However, that I’m talking about these earphones in such terms reveals that the Sennheiser IE 300 aren’t quite the “flat” or neutral pair many of those still buying high-quality wired headphones will want.
