About this deal

All that would be required is to remove any existing facings (architraves) on the ceiling to allow a flush fit. We recently bought our new house at auction, which suffered the terrible fate of burst water pipes, which flooded the property and wrecked the old plaster gyprock ceilings.

More detail is needed so, support the joist to be cut at each side of the intended opening, a good strong batten screwed down over 3 consecutive joists does the trick.Every one of our loft hatches exceeds NHBC (National House Building Council) size requirements for loft openings. The advantage being the removal of the lid maximises the clear opening of the loft hatch which can be useful.

We do however, supply a conversion kit which enables you to convert an existing push up door in to a swing down door. If you want to add a rail to a ladder that doesn’t have one, or have an additional one, we even have attachable safety railings in our loft ladder accessories range. Competitors often offer safety handrails as a chargeable extra and none that we know of supply with twin pivot arms. Supplied by specialist companies these look very stylish, are easy and practical to fit and, most importantly, are fully compliant with the building regs including the strict fire safety rules.

Where specified in the product descriptions most twist catch loft hatches are available with a key locking option for additional security. Here's how I finished installing a loft ladder kit with hatch for easy access to the attic, creating more storage space and a wider more comfortable way to access. Having already made one hole in the plasterboard you don’t want to make another one by over-balancing on a joist and putting your foot through the ceiling! We then took the loft hatch frame to where we'd cut and trimmed any protrusions before making even, resting above the fascia.

Not lifetime guaranteed or offered by companies who have been trading for a relatively short period of time – probably not worth much in the event of a problem. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There are multiple factors you need to consider such as the size of your loft entrance, the distance of your entrance from the ground, and the functionalities that you would expect from your ladder.

In most modern houses the existing access will not be large enough for a ladder and so will need to be enlarged.Of course 99% of folks will be concerned by this, which is fine until a surveyor is looking at the home on behalf of a purchaser. Manufacturers like FAKRO, Manthorpe, Youngman and Timloc have been hand-picked to supply loft ladders and loft hatches to open another space in your home. Then, cut away the plasterboard before removing and replacing the existing trimmers (the lengths of timber which form the two ends of the door hatch by fitting squarely between the joists). On traditional roofs the timbers could be cut as you say, but this is moving beyond the capabilities of a novice.
