There are lots of ways you can approach a Christmas-themed junk journal. Last year, I made a collection of soft-cover fabric journals (once again using envelopes and fabric as my base). The story as a whole is a dark and twisted apocalyptic tale. Not a terrible plot, but I became bored with it, likely because the characters didn’t compel enough emotional weight to the story. All that said, Bohem’s heart is in the right place in what I took as his thematic critique of our consumerist ways and the outrageous, unbalanced power of wealth in society. It’s not an environmental disaster that occurs in this story, but rather a demonstration of how easily power leads to tyranny. Unfortunately, he’s rather heavy handed and his messages are blatantly didactic. Not bad messages, but they don’t develop into a good work of fiction.

Occasionally a 'teenage novel' comes along which makes one reconsider the whole genre and its potential. Such a book is Melvin Burgess's Junk."
