Great whisky but a bit low on ABV. If this whould have had 48% alcohol I think it would have been more balanced, had would have had more depth. Nevertheless this is a great product :-) Well crafted and clever - a lot too discover within a very narrow range of flavors. At first this might seem a simple whisky, but it's not. Let it open up, let it evolve. Great depth with hints of peach, honey like sweetness, leafy influences, vanilla and a hidden sourness. Lovely! And this continued satisfaction ensures that the single malt industry keeps growing and allows us snobs to keep enjoying the fruits of everyone else's labor. The ex-sherry cask aged components blended here must be very minimal. I’m more inclined to think that a small portion of ex-sherry cask-matured Glenlivet was blended in this expression, rather than it being a finish. The distillery DNA and American oak flavors are more noticeable from start to end, while he ex-sherry notes like the dates, cherries and milk chocolate are sparingly present on the nose and finish.

We mash the grist with hot spring water in a ‘mash tun’, a machine with rotating arms that stirs the mixture. The modern ones we use here on Speyside have been designed to obtain the maximum possible sugar and starch from the grist. I previously tasted the Glenlivet 12 Year Old and the no longer made 12 Year Old French Oak Finish (replaced by the 15 Year Old French Oak) and now this 18 Year Old, of which I had received a sample from my friend Niek. Glenlivet are not known for their brilliance, I will admit. However, their malts are carefully crafted to cater to the ever growing mass of whisky drinkers in a bid to keep them satisfied. In stage two, we distil the low wines in the spirit still. Once cooled, the stillman ‘cuts’ the liquid, separating the heads (the high alcohol liquid that comes out first), the heart (the desirable liquid of appropriate strength and quality) and the tail (the unusable liquid that comes out last). We recycle the heads and tails, the heart goes into the spirit receiver. MATURATION

The Glenlivet 18 year old is a true masters product, well crafted and balanced. Bit low on ABV, but it's ok. Not too watery. And full of flavors: hints of sourness with orange geste, warm apples in the oven, pear and pie. Although all these components are considered to be warm, this whisky gives something fresh -almost like minty (mentol candy)… Hint of milk chocolate, hint of hidden leather. Leafy at the end. Lovely! Finish: Pretty decent finish. Medium long, with some spice coming in. Nice fruity finish; not sweet, but stewed fruits. unchillfiltered, uncoloured and 46% ABV. For a 18 years old whisky it smells and tastes exactly how it should be - clean, smooth and mature. It is nothing George Smith is born in 1792 a small hillside farm in the parish of Glenlivet. Salty almonds drizzled with cinnamon amid a basket of dark oranges. You can't help but like this nose.Palate: Full and rich with notes of chewy, tannic oak. Manuka honey and walnut with Cox’s apples and orange peels. Cut herbs - fennel and spearmint. Color, Body, Aesthetic experience: Nice golden honey amber. Medium to light body. Points for age but not much else. Palet: A light candied wood flavor at first sip. There is that caramel again with some vanilla extract underneath. Very creamy. Sweet.

I found it to be pleasant - both to nose and its flavor bouquet - "fit for everyday use". It is competent sipped with or without a splash of water and being American - I often add a few cubes of ice, particularly in the summer. Nose (undiluted): Though the nose is a bit understated, the sherry cask influence is evident with dried fruits, but with more brightness than the raisins and dates profile I typically associate with sherried whisky. Dried cranberries and raisins perhaps. Cherries. Vanilla frosting, icing sugar, oak.The water we use comes from Josie’s Well, a natural spring that bubbles out of The Glenlivet’s dark earth. In the mash tun, the enzymes developed during the malting process convert the starch in the malt into sugar. The clear, sugary liquid produced by mashing is known as ‘wort’.
