Car makers are preparing to launch a range of vehicles which replace traditional wing mirrors with rear-facing video cameras that stream footage of the view behind onto screens on the vehicle’s dashboard. The innovation is said to be safer and more fuel efficient than reflective glass.Cameras can adjust to low light levels and provide an enhanced image giving the driver a better view at night, and it can reduce the glare from headlights. Another feature that has been introduced is cameras inside the mirror this works when reversing your vehicle and shows you the rear image inside the vehicle normally on a screen. Mirror cameras can also show more detail in some cases, such as in dark places like tunnels or when parking at night in a bad light and bad weather. The dash to fit them to cars is being driven by changes to international regulations. These would make digital mirrors legal and are anticipated to come into effect in 2016 or 2017. They are being drawn up by a United Nations Committee made up of car manufacturers, businesses and regulators, which met last week in Geneva. Among the members is Britain’s Department for Transport, which has proposed limiting the location of video screens to either side of the cabin, where drivers would naturally look for conventional mirrors.
