About this deal

In the PrimeFilm XE scanner the TCD2707D sensor active area is 35mm wide and is being used to scan a 24mm wide area so the optical resolution is a maximum of 7881 ppi. PrimeFilm XA maxes out at 10,000DPI “ ultra-resolution ” , which can yield 137- megapixel scans, or images measuring about 14,370 by 9,566 pixels. Tapping the physical ⏮ and ⏭ on PrimeFilm XA will move the film by about a millimetre in either direction. You can also apply modifications such as precise cropping and choosing different aspect ratios prior to printing. The problem is that LoCAs are extremely difficult to correct with complex designs using special glass to fully correct the aberration.

Many film photographers use the Epson Perfection V600 and love it for its flexibility and versatility. You should know that the 3000 dpi models seem to use a very similar lens to the one used inside the 10,000 dpi models! I have always had a scanning issue, my scans have anything from one to three coloured lines that run the length of each scan, usually they show up on black and white scans as red and/or blue in colour. Opening them up to retrieve the film is simple as well, made possible by a small knob on the end of each carrier; a design choice that feels both purposeful and attractive. So, in the 45 mintues between loading strips on the v600, I've rabbit holed down the dedicated scanner route.Using slides, you can insert one at a time into the front of the scanner, there is no functionality provided for scanning APS films.

With the recently released Minolta Scan Dual 3, the level of performance required for 400 has been pushed up a notch and this PF 3600 Pro can't keep up. The granules that show up on enlargements appear to have strong micro-contrast when developed in Ilford DD-X .With that audience in mind, the 3650Pro3 offers optical resolution of 3,600 pixels per inch (ppi) and such conveniences as an automatic feed for strips of film and Digital ICE for hardware-based digital removal of scratches and dust, restoring faded color, and smoothing graininess. Scan quality is reasonably good overall, but suffers from a lack of dynamic range, the ability to retain shading across the entire range from black to white. Yes, scanning is a pain, and since there are zero options that are affordable and easy enough to use, I have decided to have a lab scan all my film for the time being, and – hard as it is – shoot less so I can still afford it. The magazine in this scanner can accommodate up to 50 slides at a time, letting you start the slide processing process while moving on to other tasks.
