Johnstone has plenty of tricks up her sleeve in this suspenseful tale of betrayal and revenge, memory and imagination, and the thin line between love and hate. But I pushed on and once I got my head around their games and understood the reasons for them, I really got into it and from then on I was gripped! I’ve seen that a lot of readers struggled to get into the story due to the mix of genres, not knowing what’s real and what’s fantasy at the start.
Yesterday was my stop and huge apologies for missing out Dave, but whilst I was going to review it, I’ve trying to get out of my slump this month so I decided to read it a bit later on and do a spotlight of the book as well. Vivid and creative writing brings this world to life and provides important context for what is happening in the present. As girls, they invented Mirrorland, a dark, imaginary place under the pantry stairs full of pirates, witches, and clowns. Told as Cat's first-person account of suddenly reentering her estranged sister's life after years of absence is both traumatic and convoluted at best. He intersperses them with snippets of history, all scrupulously accurate, and with descriptions of the cities he visits. The main reason I suggest this is because the book moves back and forth between the present and the past, something that is very difficult to tell when you’re listening to the narration. Though it is a psychological thriller at it’s heart there are elements of horror as well as magical realism all of which help bring El and Cat’s story to light.Having had a trusted blogger read and love Mirrorland, I had pretty high expectations going in, expectations that it absolutely knockdown out of the park. Johnstone's debut had me flying through the pages while also wanting to sink into her gorgeous writing. I’m so glad that I got onto this blog tour, Cat and El’s story is one that is going to stay with me for a while after reading and I can see Mirrorland making more than one venture into my dreams. Their friendship blossoms as they help each other, offering support, hard truths, and loving backup. It can feel a little confusing at parts, but stick with it and everything will come together in ways you didn’t expect.
