About this deal

A century old recipe guards the secrets of Amaro Montenegro and produces a tonic liqueur that has been enjoyed regularly throughout this time. Silky, concentrated texture, under pinned by an intense, powerful and vinous structure, but retaining its elegance. While the big brands have very successfully muscled their way onto the back bar there are still plenty of boutique producers out there, and not just in Italy. After this, twelve mother essences are taken and synthesized into six tasting notes: bitter and herbaceous, spicy and floral, chocolate and caramel, fresh and balsamic, vanilla and red fruits, and warm and tropical. Amaro Averna has a distinctive orange flavour and includes over 33 different herbs including cinnamon and gentian. This Kiwi got introduced to this grappa in Bologna when I was working for a while at the Ducati Motorcycle factory in nearby Borgo Panigale. You cannot find Italian amari at the supermarket (apart from DiSaronno) and one I always miss is my favourite, Amaro Montenegro.

In 1896, it was renamed Amaro Montenegro, after Princess Elena of Montenegro who married Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel, the future King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy .

It's one of the best ways to drink this Italian bitter liqueur and comes out bubbly, bittersweet, and refreshing.

This intriguing spin on the Negroni features Amaro Montenegro, with hints of rose and an herbal bitter finish. If you are concerned about allergens we would always recommend you check the product label before use.

Fernet is a particularly bitter style of amari, while rabarbaro are made with rhubarb and carciofo are amari made with artichoke.
