Absolutely loved it, found myself trying to figure out if there were profound meanings or if Hiromi Kawakami was just writing fictional observations for her own enjoyment. I liked that she was genuinely documenting observations of different people and events in the neighbourhood. At face value, that could be it! Think everything or think nothing. She said it’s People From My Neighbourhood- and that’s what it is! The ways in which time and place shape us are a common theme that flows through Kawakami’s works, from the attempt to bridge generational gaps sharing a barrail in Strange Weather in Tokyo or the shared workspace in The Nakano Thrift Shop being a catalyst for romance and camaraderie. If a person can be said to be the embodiment of space and time, even The Ten Loves of Nishino shows how the lives of ten women are shaped each through their time with the same toxic man. People from My Neighbourhood highlights the importance of place and community and the ways in which those in proximity fit into each other’s lives, being both the central figure in their own narratives and supporting cast for everyone else. While there isn’t much character development through each character's minor cameos across the collection, it greatly develops the impression of the community and makes it feel well rounded and lived-in, with the community and town itself becoming the central character. And what’s more, when I was a child, didn’t I imagine them as caricatures – witches, old men, seers, rebels, charlatans? It’s as though People From My Neighbourhood reminds us of how we once perceived the world. The telling captures the elaborate fantasy that embellishes the stories of the very old when they recount their lives to the very young (the only people who will understand the magic they have lived, and not scoff).As the volume progresses, Kawakami moves further into the territory of magical realism. “Weightless” is a striking example of Kawakami’s surreal storytelling and delicious sense of irony: A lot of what I read I would classify as weird fiction. To me it's quite a broad term, running from the uncanny to full on horror or science fiction, and everything inbetween. There's traditional weird (H.P. Lovecraft). There's post-modern weird (J.G. Ballard). And then there's a special category that Japanese authors tend to gravitate to - I'd call it naive weird. It has all the components of the uncanny, but without any of the chilling or menacing nature a lot of weird fiction tends to have. The owner also lives in the same area so he is very cordial with everyone. The grocery store saves everyone a long trip to the market and also their time. The park in my neighbourhood remains clean at all times. A wonderfully quiet example is “The Hachiro Lottery”, in which a boy named Hachiro, who is the fifteenth child of a local family, is passed around from household to household because his family cannot afford to keep and feed him. It’s one story among many which teeter between unusual and unsettling.

I like that this story was a metaphor to a cynical message-- you should be careful for what you wish for. There would always be a small price to pay. For instance, it seems as though our narrator is one of the only people to have aged in her neighbourhood. Not that things stay the same; rather that as one thing disappears, another takes its place, and some things started life old. Or maybe they started it as something else entirely. It’s as though the passing of time in the neighbourhood doesn’t really fit with age or change in that way. And yet, we accept this logic as we would in a dream: timelessness is a given, a condition of Kawakami’s compelling other-world.
