About this deal

Even if it did fit the themes and the whole book was cohesive in that sense it wouldn’t change the fact that at its core this was a directionless comic with no central point and nothing interesting to say about the characters. This distinction has resurfaced in modern comics in temporary spurts or alternate universes, from Batman gaining the powers of Black Adam during the climactic battle of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths to his using an experimental compound to stand toe-to-toe with an evil Superman in Injustice. Bringing up The Imposter again, I’d like to highlight one of the biggest differences in presentation. I suppose it was worth it to keep the art consistent for the whole series but it certainly made this climax even more underwhelming than it already would have been.

Across the eight issues of Batman: Fortress, Gary Whitta and Darick Robertson introduce readers to their own dark and violent vision of the DC Universe. Gary Whitta ( Rogue A Star Wars Story) and Darick Robertson ( The Boys) have joined forces to tell a brutal and shocking adventure that will turn everything you think you know about Superman upside down! Batman confronts Superman at the Fortress’ center only to learn that the alien invaders had secretly been tailing him the whole time, knowing the Dark Knight would lead them to their prey. Believing that the world always needs a Superman, Kal-El complies while transferring his power to Batman who modifies his costume and expands his crimefighting crusade from Gotham City to encompass the whole world.

Batman carries bacon in his utility belt because he often runs into guard dogs, he points out that he uses it more often than Bat Shark Repellent. Graphic Novels Batgirl (comic) Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: Rebirth (comic) Batman (comic) Batman ’66 (comic) Batman ’66 Meets the Man From U.

With the exception of a few characters these are all very much Whitta’s interpretations and unfortunately rather than feeling like fresh new takes, they usually come across as mischaracterized versions of the traditional. On top of that, we get a nice take on President Luthor after a good long while and his interactions with Batman are another highlight. For the heroes we need to have a gay kiss from multi-racial Aqua-guy, odd that no other character's sexuality was highlighted, almost like an agenda. Plus I always appreciate his ability to mostly be framing a grounded, up-close imagery but when it's needed to bounce between that and big action shots and dynamic pages, he can transition quite well.Thankfully, Batman: Fortress manages to push in that direction while keeping its feet on the ground enough to tell a good looking, grounded story that manages to shock and surprise and keep you engaged and entertained from start to finish. Superman is permitted to live, so long as he is permanently depowered, which is achieved through a molecular chamber within the Fortress of Solitude.
