Playing Lands of Galzyr couldn’t be simpler, move your character a couple of spaces and then read through several paragraphs of text as your character goes on an adventure. During this text, you’ll come across moments where you’ll have to put die-rolling skills to the test. Setting up the game requires you to bring out the beautiful map of Galzyr, which features a summer and winter side of the board. You use a weather card to set up the game, place your locations and any previous cards from the last game. These can be quest cards, status effects on the board or event cards from a previous game. The suggested playing time is pretty much spot on. This is fine for solo or a 2-player game, but the game gets longer with more players, despite there actually being fewer rounds. Again, there’s a lot of reading and players resolve their scenes one at a time. Open game world: You decide the direction of your adventure. There’s lots to see wherever you choose to go. SL: It’s next to impossible to know what other publishers choose to do in the future. I believe the industry has room for both. While we knew there to be a vocal group of players who dislike anything digital in their board gaming table, we wouldn’t have chosen the path we did if we didn’t truly believe it to make Lands of Galzyr a better game. We wanted to have a physical storybook but the benefits outweighed the downsides so greatly that we didn’t really have an option in the end. Lower price for the consumer, no fear of spoilers, no need to search for the right paragraph to read, and being able to update the book later made it quite clear that we made the right decision for the game.

Whereas other story games have an identity crisis, unable to decide if they’re a board game or a story game. Lands of Galzyr stands out as a story game focused wholly on the story, stripping nearly all elements of board gamey goodness.
