About this deal

The documentary is Pang’s diary-like account of how the Lost Weekend played out, week by week, emotion by emotion, and on that score it offers a fascinating, revealing, and sometimes moving portrait of John Lennon unmoored, trying to find himself in a world that had caught up to him. The movie is also a portrait of Pang’s romantic passion, which as she portrays it was both innocent and deeply serious. To say that she was in over her head would be an understatement. She was 10 years younger than Lennon (and 17 years younger than Yoko), who was her boss and a Beatle. Once they were together, Yoko would phone her incessantly, wanting to know what was happening. It was all a lark; Pang was just going with the flow. But she relates, with a dailiness that’s convincing, how she and John became convivial and erotic companions, their affair rooted in a genuine affection and in Lennon’s discovery that he didn’t have to live in a way that was always so chained to his legend. (In the early ’70s, he’d become a real political scold; after the drubbing received by 1972’s “Some Time in New York City,” that was part of what he was letting go of.) The Experience Music Project, Seattle, acquired his “Clash Live in Boston”, “Tina Turner Multiple Image”, and “Bloody Sid Vicious” photos for their permanent collection in March 2012. In October, Gruen took Lennon—still a target of FBI surveillance and in the midst of a prolonged immigration battle—to the base of the Statue of Liberty, where the former Beatle flashed a V-for-victory sign. “The government was trying to put Lennon out,” says Gruen. “I thought that was a more important photo, but …” Bob was presented in June 2004 with MOJO Magazine’s prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London and in November 2010 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. For his many charitable contributions, Bob received the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award in December 2014 at the 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko’s personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon’s images.

America is where it’s at, man. I should have been born in New York, man! I should have been born in the Village, that’s where I belong! Why wasn’t I born there? Paris was “It” in the 18th century, London I don’t think has ever been “It”, it might have been “It” literary-wise when Wilde and Shaw and all them were there. New York was “It”! I regret profoundly not being American and not being born in Greenwich Village, that’s where I should have been. But it never works that way. Everybody heads towards the centre, that’s why I’m here now, I’m here just to breathe it. This is where it’s happening.’ Bob’s “Sid Vicious with Hot Dog” photo was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, London, in 1999 for their permanent collection. New York, to most people from Britain or Europe, is America. I mean, apart from the Hollywood side of it, because that’s the picture you always get as a child. You’re brought up on that skyline of Manhattan and it’s a real dream to be here and feel part of it.’ If you're returning items from our Buy 3 Get 1 Free Multibuy range then you will be charged for any items that you are keeping. It was Yoko who sold me on New York. She’d been poor here and she knew every inch. She made me walk around the streets and parks and squares and examine every nook and cranny. In fact, you could say that I fell in love with New York on a street corner… And I still do that with newcomers today, drop them down outside the Plaza and make them walk through Central Park, down to the East River, the Hudson, everywhere.’ More recently he has also photographed Green Day’s tour of Europe, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, Courtney Love, The Strypes and other new popular acts.
