About this deal

For just over 50 quid, we think this toilet along with all the extras is a bargain. 2. CarpLife Products Ltd Bivvy Loo Be sure to choose a suitable size for your needs while considering portability. Also, make sure the seat is large enough to sit down on!

Many camping toilet bags (and the Travel John bags) have a sort of crystal-filled ‘nappy’ inside to soak up liquid. We think this is important because a plastic bag filled with sloshiness sounds like a disaster waiting to happen and isn’t pleasant for waste collectors. The latter of these is more expensive and requires a lot of maintenance, but this is worthwhile for many that want to avoid rancid odours from the toilet. As you can imagine, portable camping toilets need to be emptied, so consider the disposal method of the toilet to suit your preferences. Some come with venting to help dissipate the smell and keep from leaking into the toilet area, while advanced toilets even feature chemical treated basins that help prevent odours in the first place. Emptying the 335 requires some dexterity when it’s fully ‘utilized’. It can get a bit heavy, although you only have to carry the lower half to the Elsan point and this also includes a handy spout for emptying. Hold your nose and look away! The composting toilet is an eco-friendly alternative to the classic chemical toilet. It’s a ‘dry toilet’ so requires no water or chemicals. Also referred to as a ‘urine-diverter’, composting toilets work by separating solids from liquids, directing each to a specific container for easier management and odour control.

Introducing the CarpLife Bivvy Loo, the ultimate portable toilet designed to offer convenience and comfort during your outdoor adventures. With its unique features, this toilet sets a new standard for functionality and portability. Some people suggest using cat litter instead of a liquid. The problem is that it can’t be composted or flushed, so will just have to be put in a rubbish bin. The alternative is an absorbent powder that soaks up fluids and instantly turns to gel. Again, though, it’s headed for a bin. As a waste bag system, you need to use biodegradable bags for catching and disposing waste. It’s easy enough to use and very hygienic - simply tie a bag to the toilet and then remove it when you are done. When folded it takes up very little space, but expands to a height of 1.9m and over a square metre of floor space. The updated model we had to review included a rain cover which could be used to cover a mesh opening at the top of the tent. The mesh is useful to allow unpleasant odours to escape! So how does it work? Well firstly it has two waste compartments – one for ‘solids’ and one for ‘liquids’ – you could call them number 1 and number 2 if you prefer! Compartment ‘2’ should be lined with a biodegradable liner and after use sprinkled with sawdust or peat or similar – this helps suppress nasty niffs and starts the composting process (a natural degradation of waste by bacteria). Because the solids remain dry, odour is limited, then further extracted by the use of coconut coir (husks from the inner shell) and the 12V fan, which you wire into the 12V electrical system, drawing 2W or 0.17A. Moving on, we come to this very practical if a little uninspiring option from Highlander. that does look no different from a mini wastepaper basket you may have in your home office or at work. However, in terms of getting the job done, we really can’t fault it.

The major downside we can see with this model is the diameter of the actual toilet itself. While a woman is unlikely to have any problems with it, due to size and biology (trying to be tactful and keep things clean here), many men might struggle to fit everything within the hole. Portable camping toilets are an inexpensive piece of camping equipment that more people should be buying. Available in a range of modern designs that provide a comfortable and practical toilet for camping trips, portable camping toilets are a great investment for anyone heading out on an outdoor adventure. Green chemicals’ don’t contain formaldehyde so are safer and more environmentally friendly than blue. The chemicals come in bottle or tablet form, and need changing after around 10 days. Do you need special toilet paper for portable toilets? Toilet paper holder: This inclusion won't seem important until you're struggling to locate the loo roll in a dark tent in the middle of the night! This feature is also great for those with young children as it means the toilet roll is less likely to be dropped into the portable toilet! The Tinkertonk Portable Toilet is a sizeable camping toilet suitable for larger groups. With a 20L capacity and a dual tank design, the toilet is designed for comfortable and hygienic use when out in the wild. The Carplife loo was originally designed for anglers (hence ‘carp’) but can equally be commandeered by the camping brigade. Decathlon’s Compact Folding Dry Toilet comes with a lid and is used with a 40-50l toilet bag and sawdust (bought separately). The 7.5l urine container should be emptied daily where possible – not in inland waterways where the nitrogen acts as food for algae. The time taken to fill the solids tank will vary with use. On weekend boats, the solids tank might last a season. On liveaboard boats it might need to be emptied every three to four weeks. Some designs combine a piston pump (to get pressure into the tank) with a push button to release the water. At the top end of the market, you get battery operated, or ‘electric’ toilets. Why do portable toilets need chemicals?
