About this deal

The fact remains that, even in the midst of longevity concerns, I have played Magic Maze sixteen times, and I haven’t lost interest yet. Honestly, I haven’t quite figured out how to do this within my normal writing style, but I’m kind of a “first draft best draft” kind of dude, so here we go. Meaning you can crack it open on a lonely Wednesday evening or gather seven of your closest friends and treat it like a party game.

What’s funnier is in never wanting the ire of the Pawn of Passive Aggression, you’ll watch the board so intensely you’re more likely to miss your turn to move the characters. Whenever you flip the timer, you may talk freely for as long as you’d like or until any player touches a piece. As you can see in the photo, each Action tile has a set of numbers in the bottom-right corner; these numbers indicate which player counts you use that tile for. And although it’s not a game you’ll keep on your shelf for generations, you’ll get your money’s worth out of it laughing and having a good time. Hanabi’s cooperative hand management is enchanting, the narrative in Robinson Crusoe makes the teamwork acceptable, and there are few thrills that equal solving a case together in Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective or exiting an escape room with skins intact.

If you’re unable to help all of the characters get out of the mall before the time runs out, everyone loses. I’m not prepared to sacrifice it in exchange for the frustration, however comical, of missed opportunities.

Sounds easy, but when you are trying to direct four different pieces, to four different places without talking the challenge becomes clearer. Fog of Love has a better tutorial, sure, but this is more of a “unlocking modules” as you play through, which keeps the games fresh.

So players have to gauge how worth it it is to discuss strategy versus just running through the maze and hoping other players will get what you mean. You’d think it would be easy to tell what another player thinks you should do, but it isn’t, especially if you are at odds in your plans for what needs to happen on the board.

It’s okay though – game session only last about fifteen minutes so while you’ll almost always dissolve into a mess of mixed signals and failure it doesn’t sting. If you believe board game accessibility is important and can support our Patreon you'd be helping make sure the site can continue with this valuable work. There are several timer spaces in the mall that, when activated, force the players to flip the timer and pass their action tiles to the left. If you’re having a lot of trouble with it you might just need to be a bit firmer with your group, but honestly, just play the game in the way that lets you have the most fun. This is a very good game of wordless communication and anticipation, and when you can fluidly complete the level with no miscommunications it’s a very good experience for the whole group.

Hilariously, you’ve never seen someone more panicked than when the looming red pawn towers in front of them. The green pawn, when exploring from a green space, also permits a few moments of snatched conversation. pawn; One Score-sheet; The Great Book of Challenges; Theft tile; Sheet of stickers to stick on the Hero pawns (if you wish) which allows people with altered colour perception to recognise them. There’s a number of other small rules about the dwarf moving through certain low arches, the wizard seeing the future tiles, and the barbarian smashing TV cameras – but these are pasted on for complexity and a smidgen more theme. The rules say to flip tiles using just one hand–you can’t hold the deck in your hand–and this one is too hard for me to police. As a player, you own a directional card, giving you the power to move any of the characters in that direction. Each Player can move a Hero Pawn any number of spaces and at any time in their designated direction. All of the tiles will have arrows telling you where you can move the characters, and most will also have a special action. One sheet of stickers to stick on the Hero pawns (if you wish) which allows people with altered colour perception to recognise them.
