About this deal

We have outlined the major benefits of priming (or undercoating), and when (and where) you may need to use a specific product. We’ve also given you a link to some of our tried and trusted “priming” products to help you make the right choice, and you can find our full range of “primers” here. When do I need a “primer” for internal walls/ceilings?

This primer improves paint durability and minimises the number of coats needed, significantly reducing costs. It is best suited for residential, hospitality, education, and healthcare walls. A specific masonry primer such as Dulux Trade Alkali Resisting Primer will allow you to safely paint over a wider range of pH levels without risk of adhesion loss, and we would recommend Dulux Trade Weathershield Stabilising Primerto prime/seal unstable areas. Priming FAQs High humidity and moisture in spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundry areas encourage microbial growth High humidity or conditions where moisture seeps out of exterior walls. This is less likely to occur if you’re using a water-based paint as it allows water vapour to evaporate without reacting on the paint film. If the blisters are on the surface only, the problem is likely to be caused by painting on a warm surface or under direct sunlight. It could also be because the painted surface was exposed to moisture soon after painting.Do scrape and sand away the blisters in this case alsoColours are sold in the nearest tin size but actual paint volume per tin may vary up to 10% depending on colour The terms often get mixed up and depending on where you are in the UK, you might use alternative terms. Just to confuse matters further, we also have primer/undercoats and primer/sealers, which do both jobs! The main benefit of a primer is to even out the porosity of the surface and ensure optimum adhesion so that you get the best possible results from your paint system, but other features might include stabilising a powdery surface or helping to prevent stains ruining your decoration. Confirm that the problem is indeed mildew by applying a few drops of bleach. If it whitens, it is likely to be mildew. Painting under direct sunlight or on surfaces that are too warm. This is especially true if the coating you’re using is dark in colour and solvent-based.

Note: You may also be confused by the various terms used, and what the difference is between primer a sealer and an undercoat. While some manufacturers add to the confusion, it may be worth offering a general explanation. To ensure fair pricing, we split colours into ‘Price Bands’ to group together similar priced colours. If you wish to search for the cheapest tinted colours, always select Price Band 1. In exterior situations, scrape or sand substrate to remove wrinkled paint and repaint with a high quality exterior finish. The easy answer would be “always”, particularly on bare surfaces, but of course it’s not that simple.
