About this deal

Officers Harvey and Mimi Mitchum are a married couple who act as the only two police officers in Stain'd-by-the-Sea. They believe their son, Stewart, to be incapable of any wrongdoing, and tend to circumvent the judicial process in the pursuit of justice. They also argue a lot. Shout-Out Theme Naming: As with The Series of Unfortunate Events, many characters are named after authors and other famous people, especially those associated with Film Noir and Hardboiled Detective stories: The final book, "Why Is This Night Different from All Other Nights?" was released on September 29th, 2015.

Title Drop: Subverted, several characters in each book ask the question in the title, but it's always described as "Then (character) asked the question that appears in the cover of this book", so it's never actually printed in the story.Much as the series opened with a parody of 'The Maltese Falcon', it concludes with a version of 'Murder on the Orient Express'. Hostilities between the villainous Inhumane Society and the VFD gang have escalated throughout the series - from theft to kidnap to arson - so murder is the inevitable next step, and all of the gang - benevolent, malevolent and ineffectual - are present and correct. Who committed the murder? How did they flee the scene of the crime? Why are the police so reluctant to investigate?

In 2018, an alternate cover of Who Could That Be at This Hour? was released, featuring a more realistic style of illustration, though the inside of the book remained the same. The blurb on the book included a reference to Netflix, which was at the time releasing a series based on A Series of Unfortunate Events, leading some to believe that the new cover release may be predating a prequel adaptation; no such plans have been confirmed, however, and neither have any subsequent books been released with new appearances. As does Book Three, where she is dragged to the police station and photographed at the beginning and end. Hangfire: the main antagonist; a mysterious villain in Stain'd-by-the-Sea, who is committing various crimes to try and obtain the Bombinating Beast. His plans involve kidnapping children and small aquatic animals. He started a group called the Inhumane Society and he has the ability to mimic voices. And the fourth book has cops carrying her profile to the train at the beginning, and Kit meeting Ellington at the end. That slightly subversive note, laced with laudanum, made All the Wrong Questions a satisfying read. And frankly, not a bad book to share with my kid either. I take the view that a certain amount of subversive content is good for kids, as long as rebelliousness is leavened with a bit of critical thinking. And in All the Wrong Questions, Handler aptly strikes the balance. It's pretentious but not too pretentious, creepy but not too creepy. And reading with my daughter, we call it out when we see it. Much of Hangfire's behavior involves animals or plants of some sort. It's hardly surprising he turns out to be a naturalist.
