About this deal

With the rising number of electric vehicles available, manufacturers have had to provide new ways of protecting both the user and vehicles. As such companies such as FuseBox have released standalone EV distribution units that can be added to new and existing properties. These units are most commonly supplied with a 100A Main Switch Isolator,Type A Double pole RCBO with or without Type 2 Surge Protection.

Again, it entirely depends on your existing electrical layout as to how this is done, but your electrician will certainly know. Expandable: Hager consumer units are designed to be expandable, allowing you to add more electrical circuits to the installation as needed.

What are MCB’s?

Type 1+2 surge protection devices combine the features of Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs in a single device, providing comprehensive protection against surges caused by lightning strikes and other sources. These devices are designed to be installed at the main electrical service entrance and at critical sub-distribution boards, offering maximum protection for the entire installation. As we are discussing the two terms ‘fuse box’ and ‘consumer unit’, it can be confusing what these actually mean. Periodic Inspection and Testing: Regular inspection and testing of the consumer unit and associated circuits should be conducted to ensure ongoing safety and compliance. The second condition applies to any circuits where an earth fault current is not sufficient to blow the fuse, or trip the switch in the designated time allowance stated in the regulations. Along with an MCB for each circuit and the wiring required to wire up each MCB (more on this below), that’s pretty much it in terms of what you’ll find in a consumer unit, however there are some exceptions depending on what it’s serving, whether it’s domestic or industrial etc.

For this reason, there is no such thing as a 'standard consumer unit' - but while the number of sizes, makes, brands and combinations of configurations is almost infinite there are in factonly fourmain types of consumer unit. The 18th edition was released in January 2019 and introduced a number of changes to the wiring regulations. Allowing for the use of RCBOsand two banks of MCBsthey offer total circuit separation for critical circuits and highly cost effective protection for standard circuits.

The breaker panel is the part of a consumer unit that contains the circuit breakers. It isn’t possible to replace a fuse box with just a breaker panel (you need the entire unit) so the cost to replace a fuse box with a breaker panel is similar to replacing one with a consumer unit. Cost of replacing fuse box with circuit breaker Changes to the wiring regulations with the release of the 18th Edition of BS 7671:2018 were published in July 2018 and come into effect on 1st January 2019. These regulations have a significant impact on the design of residential electrical installations. The Amendment 2of the Wiring Regulations came into effect on 28th September 2022. From this point onwards, all installations will need to comply with the 2nd Amendment. The split board shown here has one RCD and is a simple version to show the user how the board works, however most modern split load boards feature 2 RCD’s. It’s also important to understand that RCD’s have a test button which creates a simulated earth leak with a resistor, and it is usually recommended that they are tested once a month to ensure they are operating correctly. The most common enclosure is the standard surface mounted, metal, 'Amendment 3',enclosure. All four types of consumer unit are most commonly supplied in this format. They usually always feature a front lid hinged at the top, so that it closes through gravity when not being worked on, thus ensuring it is always closed. Width is dependent on the number of circuits, but they are usually about 240mm high and 110mm deep.
