About this deal

Bokeh and subject separation aren’t lens review topics that most would rank high on for a 27mm (41mm) pancake lens with a f/2.8 max aperture, but the Fuji 27mm actually does quite well in these categories. Before I say more, I’ll mention as I always do: I see bokeh in two ways, It’s either a compliment to the photo or its a distraction. I’m not interested in onion rings, cat eyes, aberrations, or astigmatisms, and steer clear of technical evaluations of bokeh. When used on the X-mount cameras with their 1.52x crop factor sensors, it sees the same angle of view as a 41mm lens sees when used on a 35mm camera. I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap so I'm always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either.

Ignore the crazy rainbow dots at small apertures; these are sensor artifacts caused by taking a picture directly of the sun and exposing for the dark underside of a huge palm tree, and using that same palm tree to hide the sky to accentuate the stars. The Fuji XF 27mm f/2.8 ASPH is optically close to perfect, tiny and focuses super fast. It's a great little lens. Optical excellence, lots of metal parts in the same size as a lens cap for not much money? Everyone should have one of these! While 50mm equivalent lenses are often too long, and 35mm equivalent lenses often too short, "perfect normal" lenses —lenses equal to the diagonal of the image sensor —are the perfect normal focal length. At 41mm equivalent, this funny-sounding 27mm lens is actually the one normal lens you might need for everything. You don’t have to like the ’40mm’ view, of course, but I rather do – although I don’t have this lens yet. Compromise is much sneered at but it’s essential to most aspects of life. Without it, you get products that are perfect in one aspect but too big, too expensive or too hard to use – and that applies to many kinds of equipment, not just photographic. Alas, the 40mm pancake re-invented for digital, again. Fuji has done a nice job in having a 3rd party build a compact lens and f2.8 is nice. Besides being purpose-built for digital, the good thing about this lens is the same as every other pancake lens ever invented. Its a small lens that is good enough in most other aspects. Its a compromise, that is all. Anyone familiar with Fujifilm’s nomenclature will notice the letters R and WR in the name of the 2021 version, indicating it now has an aperture ring and weather-sealing. Despite its compact size, measuring 62x23mm and weighing 84g, Fujifilm’s managed to squeeze-in both a manual focusing ring and a new aperture ring, although the former has understandably narrowed compared to the 2013 model. A dome-shaped lens hood is also included. The unique perspective of the 27mm offers an effortlessness that I have never experienced with any other lens. The ability to simply visualize a shot and capture it naturally exactly as you pictured is what makes this lens so special. The 27mm provides a full-frame equivalent of 40.5mm, which is as close to perfect normal as you’re going to get within the native Fujifilm ecosystem. In modern photography, the perfect normal focal length seems to be underappreciated—referenced in passing, but ultimately overshadowed by more common focal lengths. But the 27mm has the potential to rekindle consumer interest and bring the perfect normal lens out of the shadows. And I can personally confirm that the perfect normalness of this lens is part of what makes it unique compared to more widely used focal lengths like 35mm or 50mm.

It works surprisingly well on my Fuji X-T30; all data communication and autofocus work as well as a real Fujinon lens. Additionally, a tiny metal dome-shaped lens hood (LH-XF27) is also included in the box which screws into the 39mm filter threads on the front of the lens.

Product Specification

People worry waaaaay too much about sharpness. It's not 1968 anymore when lenses often weren't that sharp and there could be significant differences among them; today they are all pretty much equally fantastic.

That first paragraph could be the entirety of this article. It says everything that you need to know (although my full review of the 27mm f/2.8 lens can be read here). If there could only be one lens in our household, it would be this one! But why? What makes this lens special? The Fujifilm 27mm lens boasts a metal mount and focusing and aperture rings, high-grade plastic barrel and non-rotating 39mm filter thread. owing this lens, plus the content you’re actually here for: sample photos!
