Members learn to befriend themselves and deepen self-trust, and show up fully to their messy and beautiful lives with freedom, health, and joy.In this particular vision I saw myself in Doc Martens and flowy dress, linked arm in arm with a long line of women as we marched together across the landscape. What we do not realize is that these aspects of who we are mustfind expression, and so we project them onto other people, organizations, or the world at large. Its symptoms were nervousness and melancholy, and unfortunately for patients, doctors argued there really was no cure, other than simply to “go home” and see if it passed. We were journeying to freedom, together, and if anyone stumbled or fell, one of us would break rank and reach out to lift her up. I began by being aware that as I was stepping with my left foot, I was at the same time stepping with my right, because my left foot could not be without my right.

During my time in India, I wrote in my journal, contemplated each experience, and asked the shadow to be revealed in dreams. When you conform to gain acceptance, you pretty much have to slice and rearrange bits of yourself to fit into that particular puzzle. But not once, as I walked through this or the aftermath, after he was gone, did I feel depressed or hopeless.At times I envision the process of coming home as a journey through rivers and valleys, over mountain tops and through forest. I want to use my voice and resources to help build a world that is even a tiny bit safer, kinder for all people. And yet the only way we can heal them, move through them, and make our home a more cozy place is to turn toward them. I can see why people would like this book so I wouldn’t necessarily dissuade anyone from reading it—it’s not inherently bad, it just didn’t work for me. I want to believe that the moment we take our last breath on this side of the veil, we wake up on the other side.

I found Rae’s writing through social media and some of the posts resonated with me, so I thought I’d give this a try. When I stumble I pick myself up with compassion and when I tip into trying to measure up or keep up to arbitrary standards, I come back home to my vision and reorient myself. Sometimes what is to come in the next 20 minutes or hour, most often the next year or season, and sometimes, as with the vision I’m about to share, it takes decades to fully come to fruition. Slowing downwards creates opportunities to dwell more deeply in one’s life, for the home we are looking for in this world is within us all along. It almost seemed like a book to read when you’re going through a breakup, which I am not, so some parts didn’t feel as relevant to me.
