From left, General Uzi Narkiss, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and Chief of Staff Lt. General Yitzhak Rabin in the Old City of Jerusalem after its fall to Israeli forces We're told that particular Muslim is now 'saved' and in effect a 'good guy' today, doing good respectable work. Well what a terrific first week of the five 'Countdown To War' episodes. First class. I'd like to say it was thoroughly entertaining, but it was more than that. Ripley, Tim (2001). Days to War is a series of eight short television dramas commissioned by Newsnight and broadcast on BBC Two between 10 March 2008 and 19 March 2008 to mark the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. It starred Kenneth Branagh, Toby Jones, Juliet Stevenson, Art Malik, Stephen Rea and Avin Shah. However, Claire scored a direct hit, as the attractive interviewer huffed, puffed and protested her innocence, letting her quarry escape. I felt sorry for the interviewer as I find her quite attractive, and wonder if someone could ask her on my behalf in a Joey-off-Friends kind of way: What you doing after the show? The Centre for SouthEast European Studies". 12 March 2007. Archived from the original on 12 March 2007. Speaking three weeks after the war ended, as he accepted an honorary degree from Hebrew University, Yitzhak Rabin gave his reasoning behind the success of Israel: Ronan Bennett . . . keeps his well-known lefty sympathies out of the frame. He allows instead the sheer historic weight of events".

When the Israeli cabinet convened to decide what to do, Yigal Allon and Menahem Begin argued that this was an opportunity to take the Old City of Jerusalem, but Eshkol decided to defer any decision until Moshe Dayan and Yitzhak Rabin could be consulted. [116] Uzi Narkiss made a number of proposals for military action, including the capture of Latrun, but the cabinet turned him down. Meanwhile, the Egyptians hindered their own defence by effectively shutting down their entire air defence system: they were worried that rebel Egyptian forces would shoot down the plane carrying Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer and Lt-Gen. Sidqi Mahmoud, who were en route from al Maza to Bir Tamada in the Sinai to meet the commanders of the troops stationed there. In any event, it did not make a great deal of difference as the Israeli pilots came in below Egyptian radar cover and well below the lowest point at which its SA-2 surface-to-air missile batteries could bring down an aircraft. Editor Peter Barron explained why Newsnight has supported these dramas on his blog. The lead up to war in Iraq is one of the most requested stories Newsnight receives and we've covered it extensively over the last five years. Through drama we get an opportunity to focus on stories that otherwise we could do not either because cameras were not present or key people in the events do not want to be appear directly. Drama is also a way to reach an audience that would not normally watch the documentaries or news programmes.

At all locations where RS (Republic of Slovenia) armed forces ( Slovenian Territorial Defence) have the tactical advantage, offensive actions against enemy units and facilities will be carried out. The enemy will be summoned to surrender, the shortest deadline possible for surrender given and action taken using all available weapons. While in action, any necessary arrangements will be made to evacuate and protect the civilians. Following the war, Israel experienced a wave of national euphoria, and the press praised the military's performance for weeks afterwards. New "victory coins" were minted to celebrate. In addition, the world's interest in Israel grew, and the country's economy, which had been in crisis before the war, flourished due to an influx of tourists and donations, as well as the extraction of oil from the Sinai's wells. [200] The aftermath of the war also saw a baby boom, which lasted for four years. [201]

System Requirements

Tal's advance was led by the 7th Armored Brigade under Colonel Shmuel Gonen. The Israeli plan called for the 7th Brigade to outflank Khan Yunis from the north and the 60th Armored Brigade under Colonel Menachem Aviram would advance from the south. The two brigades would link up and surround Khan Yunis, while the paratroopers would take Rafah. Gonen entrusted the breakthrough to a single battalion of his brigade. [92] a b c d J. After the war, the entire Soviet bloc of Eastern Europe (with the exception of Romania) broke off diplomatic relations with Israel. [231] The 19 June Israeli cabinet decision did not include the Gaza Strip and left open the possibility of Israel permanently acquiring parts of the West Bank. On 25–27 June, Israel incorporated East Jerusalem together with areas of the West Bank to the north and south into Jerusalem's new municipal boundaries. Anyway the drama makes you want to know the characters involved more . . ." Failure is Not an Option: Anne Campbell and Paul Stinchcombe on their votes in the British House of Commons to authorize a war on Iraq.I congratulate the BBC for making these programmes and now cannot wait to watch the rest of this excellent series. And by the way surely no-one can accuse the BBC of making any of this up or being in any way biased. Israeli weapons were mainly of Western origin. Its air force was composed principally of French aircraft, while its armoured units were mostly of British and American design and manufacture. Some light infantry weapons, including the ubiquitous Uzi, were of Israeli origin. The Slovenian government resisted these moves and successfully ensured that the majority of Slovenian Territorial Defence equipment was kept out of the hands of the JNA. It also declared in a constitutional amendment passed on 28 September 1990 that its TO would be under the sole command of the Slovenian government. At the same time, the Slovenian government set up a secret alternative command structure, known as the Manoeuvre Structures of National Protection ( Manevrska struktura narodne zaščite, or MSNZ). This was an existing but antiquated institution, unique to Slovenia, which was intended to enable the republic to form an ad hoc defence structure, akin to a Home Guard. It was of negligible importance prior to 1990, with antiquated weapons and few members. However, the DEMOS-led government realised that the MSNZ could be adapted to provide a parallel organisation to the TO that would be entirely in the hands of the Slovenian government. Once her mouth was open it was difficult to stop her now she was in full flow. For reasons of safety, the General had already scuttled behind the white flag of acquiescence but the interviewer battled on, attempting to put a question to her. The cheek of it! Claire Short immediately castigated the interviewer, (have I mentioned how attractive-looking the interviewer is?), for committing such rudeness, screaming: "You're not listening to me!"

The eight episodes, each of which focuses on the events and issues from the same day exactly five years ago, have been painstakingly researched by our team of journalists and woven into mini-dramas by the dramatist Ronan Bennett. They'll be played by an all-star cast including Kenneth Branagh, Juliet Stevenson and Tom Conti. (Watch the trailer here). The Israelis broke through with tank-led assaults. However, Aviram's forces misjudged the Egyptians' flank and were pinned between strongholds before they were extracted after several hours. By nightfall, the Israelis had finished mopping up resistance. Israeli forces had taken significant losses, with Colonel Gonen later telling reporters that "we left many of our dead soldiers in Rafah and many burnt-out tanks." The Egyptians suffered some 2,000 casualties and lost 40 tanks. [92] Advance on Arish Israeli reconnaissance forces from the "Shaked" unit in Sinai during the war a b Bartolj, Jaka (29 July 2015). In 1989 Slobodan Milošević, Chairman of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Serbia since 1986, became president of Serbia, the largest and most populous of the six Yugoslav republics. As Milošević moved to consolidate power by centralizing the state, the governments of the other republics sought to loosen the central grip on power by devolving as much constitutional power as possible to each of the republics and autonomous provinces. A series of disagreements among delegates persisted until four of the six republics each made the decision to gain independence from Yugoslavia. Supported by Germany and the Vatican, [8] Slovenia was among those republics aiming for independence. That the BBC has its own motives for launching this series would be far easier to deny if it weren't for the manner in which this subject is being debated. Reconstructions, whoever makes them, are always affected by a bias. The slant of the director, whose artistic liscence will always play a part; the target audience (chosen by the makers of the film) will affect the projection of issues raised; and the subject characters themselves cannot be relied on to know the whole truth. Ignoring the fact that many of those portrayed in the series have denied any association with their purported comments, any 'evidence' used from each individual will be affected by the very fact that their view is 'individual'. At best the view of one involved party, ergo a biased view. At worst subjects, and their comments, can be chosen to meet an agenda. Against Jordan's forces on the West Bank, Israel deployed about 40,000 troops and 200 tanks (eight brigades). [67] Israeli Central Command forces consisted of five brigades. The first two were permanently stationed near Jerusalem and were the Jerusalem Brigade and the mechanized Harel Brigade. Mordechai Gur's 55th Paratroopers Brigade was summoned from the Sinai front. The 10th Armored Brigade was stationed north of the West Bank. The Israeli Northern Command comprised a division of three brigades led by Major General Elad Peled which was stationed in the Jezreel Valley to the north of the West Bank.
