About this deal

As time went on the details of the routes, and of the landscape itself, changed. Chris Jesty therefore walked and worked to produce revised editions without changing Wainwright's format.

Peak Bagging: Wainwrights: 45 routes designed to complete all

The Wainwrights are an easier prospect for completers than the Scottish munros, being less numerous, all within a relatively compact geographical boundary and generally of a lower height. The original author’s accounts of the fells are true works of art and reflect his sometimes idiosyncratic and always self-assured views of the Lakeland fells but, with a few exceptions, don’t provide the sort of day-long round trips that Graham Uney has put together for this new book. In this book you’ll find 64 routes that, if you complete them all, by default you will also have completed the Wainwrights. A few of the summits are featured in more than one walk. That’s ok.It’s possible to avoid some of the scramblings on the Hall’s Fell route, and the views across The Dodds towards Helvellyn from the summit are reward enough to keep you motivated. He also admitted that Blencathra is “most of all a mountaineers’ mountain”, probably because of its regular stretches of scramble and rough terrain. That being said, it’s an accessible spot near the motorway and is more manageable to non-mountaineers than Wainwright would have you know. There are, for example, varied routes, with Hall’s Fall being a particular favourite among tourists. In 2010, Eric Robson presented a BBC Radio 4 documentary called "The Man behind the Mountains" (16 October 2010). [18]

You can do them more than once! Why do we need a guide book on the fells of the Lake District if Wainwright wrote seven of them? Well, I should say right here that this book is not intended to replace Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides. They are superb books. But, they were written in the 1950s and 60s, and yes, some things in the hills have changed in the intervening years. Alfred Wainwright is probably best known for his Guidebooks but, when the total bibliography is inspected, his writing and, particularly his drawings are seen to be of at least equal importance. His reputation and the popularity of his work has of course led to numerous other books which are based on his achievements and story. The Society has never set out to be a ‘collector’ of his books or memorabilia; it is not in our constitution. Where we have had the opportunity to acquire items which are in themselves unique and contain original material we have, on a very selective basis, tried to do so and, where successful, donated these to the Cumbria Archive to enable future generations to be able to see them. The Godfather of the Lake District, Albert Wainwright, mapped, documented and published a staggering 214 fells, of varying lengths and climbs, with descriptions so delicately written, you’d think he were a poet. Davies, Hunter (26 August 2008). "Betty Wainwright: Wife and muse of A. Wainwright". The Independent. Archived from the original on 21 October 2010 . Retrieved 19 October 2010.

Between 2005 and 2009, all the Pictorial Guides were updated for the first time, to take account of changed conditions on the fells. The revisions were made by Chris Jesty, and the publishers used an imitation font of Wainwright's hand lettering to make the alterations look as unobtrusive as possible. The most notable changes were the inclusion of photographs of the Lake District by Derry Brabbs on the front covers, rather than the drawings that were on the covers of the originals, and footpaths shown in red on the maps. These revised versions are titled 'Second Editions'. Revised editions of Wainwright's other Pictorial Guides, A Coast to Coast Walk, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, Pennine Way Companion, Walks in Limestone Country and Walks on the Howgill Fells were published by Frances Lincoln between 2010 and 2014, with the amendments again being made by Chris Jesty. These are not the copies you'd normally take out onto the fells. This set is printed to high quality at a larger font size than the standard copies, designed for reading in the armchair.

Review: Walking the Wainwrights, by Graham Uney grough — Review: Walking the Wainwrights, by Graham Uney

A Granada TV series Wainwright Country included Eagle Crag, Great Calva, Knott Rigg, Pike O'Blisco, Stybarrow Dodd, Thornthwaite Crag and Yewbarrow. It’s also manageable for beginners. A gentle stroll from Rosthwaite along the River Derwent will make for a good warm-up before visiting Lodore Falls Hotel for lunch or afternoon tea. 3. High Street Part of the Southern Fells, Glaramara is a tranquil hill despite being in the midst of some of the Lake District’s busiest hotspots such as Ullswater and Borrowdale. The Outlying Fells of Lakeland (an idea he had previously rejected), published in 1974, was his last major guidebook. Thereafter he concentrated on sketchbooks of larger-size line drawings until his eyesight began to fail in the mid-1980s. His Ex-Fellwanderer, an autobiographical work published in 1987, was intended to be his last written work, but he continued to lend his name and some written commentary to a series of " coffee table books" featuring the photography of Derry Brabbs. A more challenging route goes from Patterdale going along the lower part of Link Cove and then surmounting Greenhow End and The Step. Worth noting: this is definitely more of a climb than a walk! 6. Helm Crag Alfred Wainwright listed Blencathra in his top six favourite mountains and, in particular, the Sharp Edge approach. “Blencathra,” he wrote, “is one of the grandest objects in Lakeland… This is a mountain that compels attention, even from those dull people whose eyes are not habitually lifted to the hills.” Harry Griffin – Lakeland diarist and friend of Wainwright's, who nonetheless disapproved of the damage to the fells that the popular guidebooks could cause.
