About this deal

Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958.

Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself.

Raised bands with panels displaying lion and gate details as well as label lettering in gilt tooling. Needless to say, printed map of where Joan of Arc lived and traveled to meet the King and had to stop and read more about Joan of Arc on Internet. We enter the Crimean War; a war with the French and the goal of one day taking the Russian Frontier. The establishment of British Columbia is the Province connected by railway that assists this international agreement.

American schools can take a note from the history as provided as in depth and as knowledgeable as he was on our internal affairs. Churchill then goes on to describe the South African immigration and frontier, and from here he pays respectful history of fact to the foundation of Australia, New Zealand, and the island state of Tasmania. After reading this book, you can't help but wonder what kind of people deserve such a leader- the kind of leader who is relentlessly pragmatic, ruthlessly indifferent to human conditions and yet charismatic enough to save an empire from the cusp of an apocalyptic destruction. These jackets, so conspicuously prone to spine fading, show only the slightest sunning of the spines; shelf presentation is excellent. The original slipcases are clean and fully intact with little wear, though the blue paper in which they are covered has grayed.Churchill, the child of an American mother and decended from British nobility on his father's side, paid particular heed to the 'special relationship' between Britain and the United States. Queen Elizabeth I was no different for her time; make no mistake this Queen was stronger than any King could have been following the death of King Henry VIII. This is truly King James I lasting legacy – a thorough, complete, and unbiased edition in English of the Holy Scriptures. Volume I features The Bayeaux Tapestry, Volume II The Woburn Abbey portrait of Elizabeth I and an early world map, Volume III Stanfield's Battle of Trafalgar and Trumbull's Declaration of Independence, Volume IV Winterhalter's Queen Victoria and the Royal Family and Healy's The Peacemakers, featuring Lincoln and his military commanders.

Begun during Churchill's 'wilderness years' when he was out of government, first published in 1956 after his leadership through the darkest days of WWII had cemented his place in history, and completed when Churchill was in his 80s, it remains to this day a compelling and vivid history" (Bloomsbury). May-London, head and foot of spines fine, inner and outer hinges fine, internally clean and bright, no previous ownership markings, gift inscription, or bookplate, overall A FINE SET. Intentionally, I read the first volume slowly as I wanted to ensure I could learn as much as possible.Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history: around a quarter of the third volume, The Age of Revolution, is dedicated to the War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, The Great Democracies, contains a detailed study of the American Civil War. The red topstain remains strong on all four volumes, with just a bit of mild irregularity to the Volume I topstain. He began the book in 1939 and delivered the book prior to the outbreak of WWII to his publisher with about half a million words.

And of course, I had to read more about some of the key players in the long event for control of the Island especially the Earl of Warwick, the ‘Kingmaker. The endpapers are marbled, all edges are gilded, the spines elaborately gilt-tooled, lettered and dated in six compartments with raised bands. This enabled him to utilize the literary team he had assembled for the biography, to which he added dozens of outlines he had solicited from scholars. Churchill began his history during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s but did not complete it until the latter half of the 1950s, after his final retirement as prime minister.

Sir WSC provided a 2016 laugh from me out loud as I read his description of “old crooked back” (King Richard III) which was the last chapter of Volume I. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Feudal system - A political and economic system of Europe from the 9th to about the 15th century, based on the holding of all land in fief or fee and the resulting relation of lord to vassal and characterized by homage, legal and military service of tenants, and forfeiture.
