About this deal

With Nordic folklore touches and a friendship group holding onto guilt and secrets, it was no surprise to me that The Hike was an instant, could-put-down win for me. It starts out with one of the best opening sentences and from there it is as twisty as you think it will be. Who's body is on the mountainside? What are the four best friends keeping from one another? And why do they keep seeing people from the small Norwegian town on the mountain after they've been told there's a storm? Leaving behind their everyday lives, four friends hike out into the beautiful Norwegian wild - nothing between them and the mountain peak but forest, sea and sharp blue sky. I looked forward to this book! I like an earlier one by the same author and this one is set in Norway, where I live. Of course, I knew the risks. I would be too familiar with local quirks. That wasn't so much the issue, but the name "Leif" being pronounced "life" instead of "lay-f" annoyed the hell out of me. I guess I should have avoided the audio edition.

Four women who have been friends since high school have decided to go on a hiking holiday in Norway. We are wild camping on the South West Coast Path. It is a 630-mile route that starts in Minehead in Somerset and follows the coast of Devon and Cornwall, ending in Poole Harbour in Dorset. Last September, my husband James and I decided we’d like to try and hike the length of it with our two children, Tommy (8) and Darcy (6). Our only goal is to complete it as a family by the time the children have finished secondary school. Out in the wild, I’ve witnessed something magical happening with my children. They are energised and capable of walking 10 miles a day But apart from that, I quite liked the characters, flawed as they were, they seemed real, though it baffles me how anyone can agree to a trip into the Norwegian mountains without being properly trained for it. Being here in Nuuk, I ventured out hiking in a terrain I guess is comparable to the Norwegian landscape and though we never negociated anything slightly mountainous, I ended up with sore legs the day after, simply because I am only accustomed to the flat landscape of Strasbourg. Thanks to the author, Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review* Now, the friends are hiking into the heart of the mystery. And waiting on the trail is someone who’d do anything to keep their secrets buried – and to stop the group walking away alive . . . The move follows a busy couple of years for Clarke, who has seen her novels No Escape and The Castaways adapted for TV by Paramount+, although neither were produced by Urban Myth. The former starred Abigail Lawrie and Rhianne Bareto and aired earlier this year, while the Sheridan Smith-led latter is in production and was one of the first streamer series unveiled after the writers strike was called. It's a fun ride, I love hiking in the great outdoors, especially in more isolated areas on multi day hikes so for me this book was a show in. Brilliantly written, lots of red herrings and a twist I was not expecting. If you love a character driven thriller in an eerie claustrophobic atmosphere definitely give this one a go.

The Hike by Lucy Clarke will be published in Australia by Harper Collins and available in late April 2023. Bardsley branded The Hike – Clarke’s eighth novel – a “story of female friendship and survival set against a spectacular Norwegian landscape.”Liz was thirty-three, a wife, a mother and a GP. Her days were busy but organised with set schedules. Liz decided she was ready to do something different, so when she told her friends about a four-day adventure of wild hiking and camping in Norway they wondered if she was serious. Thank you to Lucy Clarke, G.P. Putnam's Sons, and NetGalley for a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own. How long will it take? Adult hikers typically complete the full trail in 6-8 weeks, although many like to do it in sections over several years. Now, the friends are hiking into the heart of the mystery. And waiting on the trail is someone who'd do anything to keep their secrets buried - and to stop the group walking away alive . . .

There have been quite a few books about groups of friends or colleagues going camping or hiking and one doesn’t return. I thought this might be similar and focus on the aftermath or fallout of a missing hiker…. with the remaining group having to keep silent in a ‘ what happens on hike stays on hike‘ kinda thing. But there's a darker side to the wilderness. A woman went missing here one year ago, scarring the mountain with suspicion and unanswered questions.Burned-out by both her marriage and work, Liz is desperate for an escape. More than that, she craves an adventure, a total reset. So, when she plans a vacation with her three best friends, she persuades them to spend four nights camping in the stunning mountains of Norway. Following a trail that climbs through lush valleys, towering peaks, and past jewel-blue lakes, Liz is sure that the hike is just what they need.
