About this deal

There’s enough of a veneer of intellectual sophistication in the book that those who want to be uncharitable towards other people’s views will be able to regard it as academic support for caricaturing opponents, rather than engaging with them. Baron, J., & Hershey, J. C. (1988). Outcome bias in decision evaluation. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 54, 569–579. doi:10.1037/0022-3514.54.4.569 Self-awareness is certainly one of the biggest steps anyone can take to at least appear intelligent. Being considerate an example of this.

I side with those who say that ignorance is not stupidity. Ignorance is a strong engine of knowledge, provided that you know you’re ignorant, and that you know what you don’t know. But we are unaware of most of the biases that affect our reception of information, and of the propensities that sway our reasoning. The problem, and it’s a serious one, is that even after these biases are exposed, they continue to work. All the more so in situations that are not conducive to doubt. Whereas stupidity, true stupidity, is the hallmark of a frightening intellectual complacency that leaves absolutely no room for doubt." This book is a collection of short essays by psychologists and other people expert in the workings of the human mind, on the subject of stupidity. It is translated from the French, which I didn't realize when I opened it, but it was fine- some of the pop culture references were a little unfamiliar, but the translation was competent, and the inevitable references to President Trump transcend the boundaries of language. Is an asshole who’s aware of his assholery still an asshole? (c) And it goes on and on, droning on that. Marmion hat die „klügsten“ Menschen zum Thema „Stupidty“ befragt. Von Daniel Kahnemann bis Antonio Damasio sind sehr viele Wissenschaftler:innen dabei, die ihre Beobachtungen aus ihrem Expertengebiet wiedergeben. Und teilweise sind sehr erfrischende Aussagen dabei. Sind TV und Social Media wirklich Medien, die Kinder verblöden?

Oh well. It’s a controversial one, as so few are willing to admit they’re stupid. Welcome to Professional Moron, sah! Remarkably comprehensive and accessible . . . The book has an easygoing, colloquial feel to it. . . . An illuminating look at a subject that is more complex than it might appear to be.”― Booklist Rather than study the idiot as an object, psychological research focuses on understanding why people act like idiots sometimes.

There are some fools who find it impossible to sleep when they are passengers; apparently they can sleep only when they’re the driver! (c)That's sort of the mindful challenge presented in this collection of reflections on the general dumb-assery of people, and how to diagnose and treat it in others and in ourselves. But if there’s one thing clear about humanity it’s that if we want to still be around in a 200 years, reading tabloid newspapers won’t achieve it. When you’re a passenger, you fear accidents much more than you do when you are the driver. (c) That's actually a control thing.
