About this deal

Bruce Daisley argues that while groups can be capable of acts of cruelty, they can also aid happiness, identity and fortitude. But what bosses often do is say, ‘We’ve arranged a burnout seminar, a resilience seminar, a webinar that you can dial into’. And he began to realize, too, that hurting the other boys in ruby was not a sign of strength, but a sign of weakness because he was allowing himself to give way to the temptation, you might say, to hurt. We're endlessly being told that if we want to be successful in life we have to be tough and stubborn.

So that point about resilience or fortitude at work, what’s interesting is that after pushing back on the narrative of ‘you just need to be more resilient’, you do actually say, and there are things that you can do to increase your resilience, your fortitude. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. In FORTITUDE, he brings this vital experience to bear, offering keen insights on how to unite our fractured country and take pride in its founding ideals — even as we face up to the tough truths of its history. It's essentially about escaping the downward pull of a dark childhood and emerging not into happiness, but into light. Overall a very good quality service from this seller and I would not hesitate to recommend this seller. They compared them to people who went to the Olympics with Team GB but won a bronze, and what they found was, these super-elites, these gold medal-winners, 100 percent of them had experienced a significant moment of childhood trauma. Walpole manipulates our expectations and produces a truly surprising, and oddly satisfying ending to the novel.

Giving Barack Obama as an example, he said: “He’s a mixed-race guy, raised in Florida by a white grandmother and a white mother. So he really struggled to connect with who he was, and it was only when he reached this realization after college that who he wanted to be and who he was that he said he became himself, his identity effectively protected him and sort became his lighthouse. Mr Zanti has a powerful aura of mysteriousness, but I think this is subsmumed by the anarchists’ plot, rather than the supernatural per se. And, you know, so the book opens with a real exploration of just something that I found, probably, you know, it was the defining first piece of work that I was like there’s something in this, I want to explore this. So, used copy, 1930 hardback Modern Library edition, foxed edges, all that "just the sort of stuff I like" kind of book. Yes, I think, you know, what you realize is there’s something I think is really helpful… Most recently I spoke to two women who wrote, Liz Fosslien and Mollie Duff I think is the other author, who wrote a book. And then lockdown happened, I was going to spend the three months of lockdown writing this book and of course, lockdown didn’t last for three months. But the London parts of Fortitude begin in the 1890s, so as well as recreating his own early successes from the Edwardian period, Walpole also does a nice job of recreating the society that was withdrawing the hem of its garments from The Yellow Book, ten years earlier.

And Sadism, as you know, is one of the great temptations for men, as I suppose Masochism might be for women. There was a bit at the end but in comparison not that applicable and short to actually get a proper guidance out of it. Negative childhood experience is principally experienced as shame, it’s experienced as something that really damages someone’s sense of identity. Fortitudeis for those who want to be reminded that you cannot, and should not, do everything single-handedly.

There is a cataclysmic scene when Stephen and Mr Zanti and Peter are playing a riotously enjoyable game of romps with Peter’s baby son, and all seems happy and natural and all boys together, until Peter’s wife opens the nursery door and stands there, glaring icily down at them.

It’s almost like it’s this choice that we each have, that you can either choose to be resilient like all the good people we’ve got, or you can choose not to be resilient, like all the bad people we’re going to have to get rid of. And the protagonist of Fortitude was a boy who was sent away to school, as they do in England, and he was afraid of his father. Too often we look to heroic figures as role models of success and perseverance but fail to consider the diverse range of issues that shroud this awe. Bruce talks about being careful regarding data correlation v cause, but feel he falls into the causation trap a couple of times in the latter chapters. On the other hand, if what you’re after is something for a long wet weekend on your own during which you don’t want to go for long walks and the TV reception is bad, this is the book for you.
