About this deal

Co-host Dolly Parton, in the midst of a late-career renaissance in 2019, joinedthe Highwomen at the CMAs, and had made history with the group a bit over three months prior, dropping in as a surprise guest during the quartet’s set at the 60th anniversary edition of the Newport Folk Festival. (“Jolene,” captured on cellphone cameras, was as close to a viral video as the Americana audience gets.) Tide heights are shown in metres. Tide height is important because the sea can sometimes come further up the beach than normal at high tideand lower than normal at low tide.

Astonishing in its frankness, raw, poignant, bracing, funny; a very human story.' DEREK NIEMANN, Guardian country diarist the wave direction (if the offshore waves are directed towards the beach and the beach is not sheltered, the power of the offshore waves are more likely to reach the beach) The pool at Ilfracombe — and its complex network of six tunnels — was man-made in Victorian times. It was formed by damming the water, so it’s covered by the sea twice a day. When I arrived, the pool was submerged. I’d have to be patient. Swimming was, in many ways, a parallel exercise to grief and I found that the learnings were often the same. It ebbed and flowed. It was stormy, then calm. The tide and high seas are moved by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun, too. Just like gravity pulls objects down to the Earth, the moon's gravity pulls things towards it, too, including the earth. Where there is sea facing the moon, this gets pulled even more causing a high tide. On the other side of the Earth, the sea is pulled a bit less, causing another high tide. As the moon moves around the earth, these tides move, too. That's why the tide will come in and go out again from the coast twice a day. Geography also affects the tidal range. Looking at tide tables for all of Britain, it's clear that the height of the tide varies around the country. For example the spring tidal range at Avonmouth is 12.2 m while at Lowestoft it's only 1.9 m.Wind direction and strength can often change during the day. The relative direction of the wind at two different beaches will vary depending on which direction the beaches face. Height of waves offshore This is the average number of seconds between the crest (top) of one wave and the crest of the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. Waves vary in frequency, so we use a standard measure known as ‘peak period’, which represents the time between the most powerful waves. The Tidal Year is a true story about the healing power of wild swimming and the space it creates for reflection, rewilding, and hope. An exploration of grief in the modern age, it's also a tale of loss, love, female rage and sisterhood. Reads like a lusciously languid dream sequence... It's not just about how water can redeem us but how words can too. A powerful debut.' CHRISTOPHER BEANLAND

Onshore winds are when the wind blows from the sea in towards the land. When onshore winds are strong the waves are likely to be rough. There will not be much shelter from the wind. The wind directions you can see are relative to the direction the shoreline of the beach faces. The arrow shows the compass direction of the wind (where up is north). If the arrow points from sea to land, the wind will be blowing from sea to land (‘onshore’). If the arrow points from land to sea, the wind will be blowing out to sea (‘offshore’). If the arrow points somewhere between the land and the sea, the wind will be blowing across the length of the beach (‘cross-shore’). The difference between the height of waves offshore and the expected surf height at the beach is determined by 3 things:The dual themes of the decade in country — that is, the mainstreaming of Americana and the overwhelming success of women artists — continued to progress in 2019. Bolstering the latter idea was Kacey Musgraves’ Grammy sweep, which included an Album of the Year win for her 2018 release, Golden Hour. As Freya travels further from London, she finds herself closer to memories of her brother. With every swim, and every stranger they meet in the water, the challenge becomes more than just a way to explore the coast, but a journey of self-discovery. The tide rises and falls much more slowly around low and high tide than in the hours either side of mid-tide. The area of beach covered by the tide can change very fast from shortly after low tide up to an hour before high tide. My book The Tidal Year is out today! As a special thank you to my podcast listeners, I've included a free preview of the prologue and chapter one from the audiobook read by me. Here's more about the book: Two “live” sets, spread over a day, from the enigmatic super-DJ Marshmello, performed in the astonishingly popular virtual world of Fortnite? What more could a Gen-Z’er ask for?

The Wu-Tang Clan told their story in two ambitious film projects: A documentary, Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, premiered on Showtime in May; and a dramatized miniseries, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, came out in September via HULU. Also upholding heritage hip-hop values were Little Brother, who released their first studio album in nine years, May the Lord Watch. And yes, the UBN network is broadcasting once again. Not all spring tides are the same size. Springs nearest the equinoxes (21 March and 21 September – when day and night are of equal length all over the world) are slightly bigger. The explanation for this is very complex and won't be given here. This is similar to when you whirl a weight round on a piece of string. It is only by constantly pulling on the string that you prevent the object from flying off. If you stop pulling completely, by letting go on the string, the object does fly off. Gravity acts in the same way as you pulling on the string, and prevents the earth from flying off. However, unlike the string, the attractive pull of gravity gets weaker as the distance between the objects gets larger (and it becomes stronger, of course, the closer they get). The earth is large, so the pull of gravity on the side of the earth nearer the moon is stronger than the pull on the side of the earth farther from the moon. The relative wind direction indicates sea conditions at the beach. It also helps to show which beaches are most likely to be sheltered from the wind. Spring tides happen just after every full and new moon, when the sun, moon and earth are in line. That's when lunar and solar tides line up and reinforce each other, making a bigger total tide. Neap tides occur when the moon is in the first or third quarter - when the sun, earth and moon form a right angle. The lunar high tide coincides with the solar low tide and they partly cancel out, giving a small total tide. Be aware that some parts of the beach could be cut off by the tide. This does not only occur at high tide; you could also get cut off while the tide is coming in Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water. Combining wave height, direction and period to give expected surf height

The tide times tell you what time the water will be at its highest point (high tide) and at its lowest point (low tide). But perhaps the most remarkable chart story of the year was Lizzo, whose “Truth Hurts” — released in the fall of 2017, mind you — hit seven weeks at No. 1 of the Hot 100, tying Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” as the only single by a female rapper to do so. And then there was Billie Eilish, with an album ( When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?) and single ( “Bad Guy”) holding down the top spot. As if her fever-dream music, fashion sense and persona haven’t already proven that a new pop generation has arrived, Billie is the first artist born in the 21st century to have a No. 1 hit. Metalheads cried into their Jägermeister throughout the fall, as thrash titans Slayer traversed North America on“The Final Campaign,”the last leg of their mammoth final world tour. (It ended on this date in Los Angeles.) Stretching far beyond a year and tallying nearly 150 shows, it was a proper sendoff for the metal hall-of-famers but still a heartbreaker for fans of loud and fast. Take a plunge into this tender exploration of grief, rage, love, loss and sisterhood in the modern age.
