About this deal

It showcases the exquisite combination of bold, distinctively peaty notes, while leaving its signature estery hint in the aftertaste. Located in the valley of Miyagi, a region in the North of Japan's Honshu island recognised for the purity of its air and the quality of its spring water, the Miyagikyo distillery produces a refined malt with signature fresh fruit and floral aromas. The location for the Miyagikyo distillery was selected because of its clean air, just the right humidity for storage, and abundant underground water filtered through a layer of peat. We recommend that you do not rely solely on the information presented here and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product.

He aimed to make a complete contrast between the two distilleries, Miyagikyo and Yoichi, with different natural environments and production methods. The Miyagikyo distillery or Sendai distillery as it used to be known opened in 1969 and was the second to be opened by the Nikka company after Yoichi in 1934. Miyagikyo Distillery was Nikka's second built in Japan in Sendai, a very picturesque mountainous region. Using less peaty malt, this whisky is distilled in a pot still heated by indirect steam at a low temperature. This expression is crafted solely from batches of peated malt, offering a significant distinction from the "light and fruity" image of Miyagikyo.Malted barley is at the heart of the palate, coated in herbaceous, liquorice, spiced (ginger, cinnamon) and chocolate tones. It lingers on notes of tobacco, spices (cardamom, ginger), toasted nuts and stewed fruits (apple, damson).

They got married in 1920 and lived in Campbeltown for a few months close to the Hazelburn distillery where Masataka was continuing his training. Bottled at 45%, it is smooth enough to not need water when sipping neat, but a tiny splash will release more layers of flavour and help with appreciating the wonderful elegance of the spirit. Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru chose a valley in the Miyagi prefecture as the site for his second distillery, and started its operation in 1969. MODERN AND INNOVATIVE DISTILLERY – Miyagikyo was set up in 1969 after Taketsuru had been making whisky at his more traditional Yoichi distillery for 35 years. There’s some darker, more complex notes too, in the form of chocolate, along with candied fruit and some honey. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotland, and this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese Whisky.

The finish is not too long, salty and sweet turn out at the same time on the tongue, then it ends up with more spices.

On the palate, lemon and vanilla flavours come to the fore, followed by notes of fudge and marzipan.

In the event of any safety concerns or for any other information about a product please carefully read any instructions provided on the label or packaging and contact the manufacturer. The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose this site in the mountains of Sendai to contrast with his first distillery, Yoichi, located in the coastal area. Plenty of Malted Barley notes at the forefront which are followed by Herbaceous undertones with hints of Liquorice and Chocolate all finished off with hints of Ginger and Citrus notes. Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt is a complex, fruity and soft Japanese single malt made at the Miyagikyo distillery near Sendai in northern Japan.
