About this deal

With out-of-the-box comfort and an updated look, the Targhee III is a day-hiking shoe that offers good performance, especially for those who have a hard time finding a pair of shoes that will fit wider feet. These shoes are one of the more budget-friendly shoes we reviewed, and with quality materials and a stylish look, we feel that they are a good value. What Other Hiking Shoes Should You Consider? Ghillie-style laces sit on the outside of the shoes, rather than looping through and into the uppers. This means that each loop can be tightened individually right down to the toes. Additionally, the top lace pulls in the webbing from around the ankle. Toe box Stability over rough terrain is very limited, and therefore we recommend keeping these boots on trail. Separately, do Keens break in considerably or just a little bit?… I’ve tried on the Targhee II in an 8 wide and they are only minimally snug… Pretty much like a glove, but still, minimally snug. I’m confident they’d be perfect for casual use/easy hiking after getting broken in, but concerned they wont break in enough for two to four days in the canyon. Can anyone speak to the extent to which the Targhee IIs break in and stretch out? —Thanks so much. I really do appreciate it.

Hey, what's up? Canberk here. A former General Electric Aviation Design Engineer. Academically involved in cold weather outdoor gear, particularly wearable heating systems using conductive polyester and polyamide yarns. Read more about me. Keen Targhee II vs IIITo prevent foot fatigue and the amount of stress placed on the foot, the boot features a TPU heel-capture system and a metatomical footbed that follows and supports the natural contours of your foot. The ESS shank reinforces the structure of the boot and upon lacing them using the speed hooks, the shank helps to hold your foot in place. Thank you for digging into the details and providing this comparison! I have a pair of Targhee Mid II that are starting to wear out but have been a great day hiker for me. I was intrigued when I saw there is a new version (III) available but that version II is still being sold so the information you provided is spot-on. I have hiked in Dominica with one pair of Targhee III boots for six months. Then they broke in multiple ways. For example the mesh just ripped. The sole came adrift from the rest of the boot. Even the stitching around the top near the ankle split. And unlike the II, the III does not have a loop on the tongue. Summary? A major disappointment. The leather uppers, combined with the KEEN.Dry membrane, offer excellent waterproofness that hasn’t let me down so far. Versatility

With you every step of the way on your next adventure is the Keen Targhee III Waterproof Hiking Boot. With an in-built metatomical footbed, an ESS shank and a TPU heel capture system, the supportive boot holds your foot in place securely. I have the Targhee lll. I don’t think it will give you the support you’re looking for because it is by design more flexible than the ll. I find myself looking for more supportive boot for the same reasons as you, and thought the ll would be better. I like the Keen fit as well. At 2 pounds 2.8 ounces, the Keen Targhee III falls into our “lightweight” hiking boot category. In use, the Targhee III feels light on the foot, and we experienced no fatigue or feelings of clunkiness that sometimes occurs with heavier boots. For comparison, the Merrell Moab 2 Mid WP is slightly heavier at 2 pounds 4 ounces, although that boot offers more in the way of stability (more on that below). Others in this category, including the Oboz Bridger Mid BDry (2 lbs. 6 oz.) and Vasque Talus AT UltraDry (2 lbs. 3 oz.) also slightly outweigh the Keen. Salomon’s X Ultra 3 Mid GTX is lighter at 1 pound 15.7 ounces, but that boot is less protective underfoot. And for a burlier option for challenging trails and longer days, the midweight category features heavy hitters like the Lowa Renegade (2 lbs. 7 oz.) and Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX (2 lbs. 13.2 oz.), both of which are considerably more expensive than the Keen. I love the fit of the Targhee II and have worn them for a number of years. My problem with them is that the support in the foot/heel area wears out way before the tread wears out. As soon as this happens (after around 6-12 months of wear), my Achilles’ tendon starts acting up and I have to get new boots. In my opinion, this is not long enough given the price. I would like Keen to fix this issue. I have come across other hikers who have had the same experience with the foot bed breaking down after a number of months.

Targhee EXP: The upper material is predominately mesh (synthetic), with leather trim to the collar for added comfort and durability. New and improved is the Keen Targhee III Waterproof Hiking Boot, which is an update on the brand’s iconic range. These are some of the most comfortable hiking shoes we have worn, and they are great for pounding out the miles After a summer of wearing mostly zero-drop trainers to run and walk in, or no shoes at all, my first few jaunt wearing the Targhees felt somewhat constricting. My arches started to cramp with all the support that they were not used to getting! That has now eased since my feet are getting more used to being supported again.

As the Targhees are not especially lightweight when it comes to hiking shoes, they actually provide decent stability at the ankles, despite their low cut. The chunky soles and midsoles really help with this. As does the heel-capture system which has TPU injected into it for greater stability. I was this-close to ask about this to the customer service, but then I've found that Keen ALREADY CLARIFIED the differences between Targhee II and III right here... All that said, I want to live, so I’m looking for a miracle boot with significant room in the toe box AND MOST IMPORTANTLY the most comfortable/soft/forgiving/cloud-like padding for the balls of my feet. (Keen boots or otherwise, regardless of the price.) I’ll happily compromise stability—hiking at the pace of a careful geriatric—for the pain relief of such gift from the podiatric heavens. Otherwise, all bets all are off. My wife will walk out of the canyon alone and into a healthy life insurance payout. Note: As you see, MID suffix points out to boots. There was a time when Keen used LOW suffix for shoes, but it seems like they changed their mind about it and now don't use any suffix for them. This is the definition of a solid hiking shoe, and is a perfect choice for those not wanting to compromise on off-trail performance There’s also ample padding around the ankle to provide comfort, though nothing out of the ordinary in terms of plushness. I'm gathering information for a wide range of possible Targhee II and III buyers (all for possibly different types of purposes), so I'd appreciate if you could share their technical & practical differences with me, as well as their most suitable intended uses. What are the advantages & disadvantages of one over the other?I hope this review was helpful for you to understand whether the Targhee II or III would be the best choice for your own needs and desires. Targhee II Waterproof MID [ Men's- Men's Wide - Women's]: If you're planning to use your Targhee's both casually AND when hiking , this one would be my top recommendation not only among these Targhee's but also probably among most of boots out there. A solid top-notch.
