The time device takes a few pages to get comfortable with, but then it becomes an exciting part of the whole illusion: How many chainsaws can Ellis juggle without doing himself and his book some serious damage? Y, por supuesto, la superstición y las creencias en mitos y supercherías están bien descritas a cada vuelta de página. Edgar-winner Ellis takes some big chances in his fourth book (after 2004’s Jury of One), and he pulls them off in grand style. I really enjoyed Company of Liars another brilliant choice by Goodreads Ireland, I have picked this book so many times in the library but put in back down. We want characters to be like us in some ways and to have similar values, but then the mindset of the period gets a bit confused.

Narigorm reminded me of the female character (Rosalind) out of In The Woods who manipulated her family and people around her. And one among them conceals the darkest secret of all–propelling these liars to a destiny they never saw coming.Again though, don’t expect a fantasy novel as “Company of Liars” is certainly not that; but there are subtle hints of childhood tales from the dark side. This was followed by The Owl Killers', 'The Gallows Curse', 'Falcons of Fire and Ice', 'The Vanishing Witch', 'The Raven's Head,' 'The Plague Charmer' and 'A Gathering of Ghosts', Her medieval novels are written under the name of Karen Maitland and are published by Penguin and Headline. As the book nears its conclusion and the company continues to find sanctuary from the approaching wave of pestilence, even characters who once seemed sanguine and redeemable (i. Het verhaal lijkt op de Canterbury Tales, maar de verhalen die door de reizigers verteld worden, zijn bepaald niet vrolijk.

There was enough historical fiction to make it quite interesting to me and just a touch of horror that made it palatable. Tenemos a Pleasance, una curandera y partera, que ayuda a Adela a sobrellevar su embarazo por esas peligrosas veredas. Camelot decides to travel with two musicians, a magician, a painter and his wife, a swan-boy storyteller, and a soothsayer as they travel away from the pestilence a.

Maitland’s novel is a juicy concoction of a medieval historical fiction novel mixed with spiritualism, magic, and mystery dumped into a pot of a fairy tale/fable core served to adults versus the Disney crowd (fear not: it is not a fantasy novel and more on the historical fiction end).

One graphic testimony can be found at St Mary's, Ashwell, Hertfordshire, where an anonymous hand has carved a harrowing inscription for the year 1349: "Wretched, terrible, destructive year, the remnants of the people alone remain. It has an interesting backdrop (in this case, historical: the beginning of the Black Death), and a cast of characters with complex desires and secrets worth protecting. I, too, wondered about the other characters but I think this is the ending that really tied all the loose threads together for me. The second book I've read by this author in as many months, this was just as enjoyable and satisfying as The Owl Killers. I nominated it for my in person book club and I can't wait to hear what those little old ladies think.

It could be her daughter, with whom she has a tense relationship, or perhaps it’s her ex-husband, for reasons that are revealed subtly. The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. I remember the reveal, just don’t remember enough of the text to make a connection…I liked the creepy though and the period detail, but interesting to hear about possible incongruity. The character of Rodrigo is the character who most suffers from Maitland inserting her thinly veiled views on homosexuality and the Christian Church into the text.

It was all of the above and so skillfully done that it made complete and utter sense as I was reading. I love well written historical fiction complete with gritty historical detail and strong characters, and this book is a splendid example. Maitland is brilliant at bringing the sights, sounds and smells of the 14th century to life, and the cast of characters was fantastic; I imagine it must be very hard to make each member of such a large group distinctive, but every one of the band of travellers was almost immediately memorable. There is no learning curve, there is no development curve and worse there is no depth to these stories, which at times feel like they were put there just to give these characters something to say or some back history for the sake of it. Its sad to see a novel pass up a chance to flesh-out their female characters and instead confine them to voiceless side-characters and stereotypical female villains.
