Macaulay, Scott (February 29, 2004). "THE 2004 INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS". Filmmaker Magazine . Retrieved June 2, 2022. Ellison, Jake (May 15, 2013). "Controversial 'Thirteen' turns 10 – Here's the stars, then and now". Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Archived from the original on June 7, 2013 . Retrieved April 24, 2018. Whoever it is who decides who gets the Oscars - wake up and realise that you need to award these to the performances, not the actors who wear the nicer dresses! I think it's silly to say that Tracy was one-dimensional at all. She clearly had so much built-up frustration towards her mother, and her mother's boyfriend. Evan Rachel Wood did a perfect job of conveying the slow inner-destruction of Tracy.

I don't want to miss the point of this film. I know the point of it is the pressures on today's adolescents, and their reactions to some of those pressures, and the effects on families in those circumstances. And if you're going to illustrate those points then you have to show cause and effect, and that means unpleasantness, and shouting matches, and drugs, and manipulation, and under-age sex and so on. You have to have those things in the movie, I get it. Thankful (and still surprised) for the path this adventure set her on, Reed believes that to make Thirteen today, details would have to be updated to reflect a world that has drastically changed, with social media proving a crucial aspect of how young people interact now. Yet, she is also sure that the core thematic pillars of the film would remain intact, and resonate. They knew more than I did about being that age at that time and I tried to listen to them and cared about what they thought,” she says.Tracy is a normal thirteen-year-old girl, dressed in bright pastels, bedroom full of soft toys and with giggly thoughts of boys. Starting school in the new term she finds everyone in awe of Evie Zamora and her friends – all of who have suddenly turned into sexy young ladies over the summer. With her goofy kid look, Evie blanks Tracy until she impresses her by stealing a purse to go shopping. As Evie gets in with Tracy's mum Mel, she also takes Evie into her own world of rebellion involving stealing, drink, disobedience, drugs and sex. Mel struggles to hold on to the small parts of her daughter that she still recognises.

Holly Hunter's absolutely blew me away. Aside from Charlize Theron in Monster, and Felicity Huffmann in Transamerica, I can't think of a better performance than Hunter's. You could actually see the terror and panic in her face as she watched her daughter slowly slip deeper and deeper into trouble. When I was younger, I'd always scout for movies like Triple Dog or Thirteen when I was 12 and bored on Netflix. I'm now 18 and this movie gives me those same nostalgic feelings I got when I watched those. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous and really gives those 2003 feels. I truly enjoy the story and the exciting adventures the teens go on. It's such an interesting experience to go on with them and I suggest watching this movie. a b c d Wilmington, Michael (August 29, 2003). " 'Thirteen' takes you inside for a gritty and honest look at teenage girls' lives". Chicago Tribune. Archived from the original on January 4, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2021. The wardrobe worn by the girls was mostly their own. As filming progressed, the girls began dressing similarly without being asked to do so. The girls did not take any dangerous substances during the film. They are shown smoking cigarettes, but these were filled mostly with catnip. The crushed pills they are shown snorting from the cover of a children's book were actually vitamins. [14] I don't know if the author was like this at age 13, but I do know she nailed the reality of life for some 13 year olds. She nailed the helplessness of the parent.

The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a chilling look at a pair of contemporary Valley girls—13-year-olds who are way beyond their years but also are nearly beyond repair," [16] while the Chicago Tribune 's Michael Wilmington called it "an excellent, unforgettable film," but also deemed it "extremely disturbing." [4] Awards and nominations [ edit ] Awards However, viewers should definitely keep in mind the fact that the themes in Thirteen shift more towards the heavy drama side, consisting of extremely gritty topics that will even have a powerful impact on mature audiences and adults. The ending certainly marks as the most traumatic experience out of the film, because unlike so many other teen movies, there's absolutely no answers and while it doesn't exactly leave off on an irritating cliffhanger, the conflict is never properly resolved. Thirteen will leave you with an unbelievable amount of unanswered questions and thoughts. In real life, I watched as 3 beautiful girls turned into these awful adolescents in real life. It was horrifying to see some of their own escapades on the screen. The heartbreak was real and Holly Hunter had it spot on. The reality of living with an out of control teen is so realistically shown. You give up your own life to try to desperately help someone you love with all your heart. Tough Love doesn't work when someone doesn't care. Over the years, she’s pitched a TV show based on Thirteen that would explore the lives of 13-year-olds in different cultural contexts, which she still hopes to make someday.
