Westmorland County Show |13 & 14 September | A popular agricultural show, with fun for all the family Situated near Oxenholme, just south east of Kendal, and although not a very high hill at 185m, it gives beautiful views.

A flyer will be included in the Autumn edition of Footsteps for members who do not wish to use these options. When you’re done exerting yourself, you’ll be looking for something to eat - and in Cumbria, we know how to celebrate our remarkable food heritage! There are marketsand foodie eventsall over the county spread throughout the year, from a celebration of marmalade to a chili eating competition. Taste Cumbria hosts a series of great festivals between April and October with lots of food stalls and cooking demos. Spring sees country shows, easter celebrations and spring fairs across the county.In Summer, discover farmer’s markets, music festivals, agricultural shows and plenty more. Autumn sees Halloween events, harvest celebrations and food and drink festivals.In Winter, celebrate the festive season with Christmas fairs, lights switch on events, panto and more.High Borrowdale is situated 8.5 miles north of Kendal. The shelter was an example of best practice in its early years but is now in urgent need of renovation and updating to continue to help animals and build on the legacy left by Alfred and Betty. The proceeds of this year’s calendar will directly support the renovation of the kennels and cattery and help the charity to continue to carry out its work for the next 50 years. We are known for our lakes, but did you know we technically only have one?! Bassenthwaite in the north Lakes is our only official lake, with the rest being meres, waters and tarns – including Windermere, Ullswater and Grasmere. Ten Thousand Daffodils | 24 April - 24 June | An installation of ceramic daffodils within the gardens of Lowther Castle. Lake or not, there is plenty to do on the water in the Lake District, Cumbria. You can hire your own boat or take a scheduled cruise in a vintage vessel. Why not try your hand at paddleboarding? It takes a few goes, but you soon get the hang of it! You can even take the plunge and invigorate your senses with a spot of wild swimming. From London, it’s just three hours by train! Direct trains are available to stations like Oxenholme for the south Lakes; and Carlisle for the north. On these special days, all schools in the district will be closed for students. Teachers and staff will utilize this time for professional development and planning.
