About this deal

This idea is a childhood classic – painting on one side of a piece of paper, folding and squishing the paint, and then opening it up to reveal your butterfly. But yes, as an adult, I do indeed and well understand that the main "protagonist" that the very hungry caterpillar is never in any manner textually and narratively developed as a character, that he remains rather flat and one-dimensional throughout, and that he also consumes mostly food products that are not even remotely suitable for caterpillars (as they basically consume mostly leaves). However, I also and absolutely know and realise for a fact that when I was three years old (and had Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt repeatedly read to me), whether the list of foods the caterpillar was eating was suitable and acceptable for butterfly larvae or not did not matter all that much to me (if at all), and that for the intended audience, both the text and the accompanying images of The Very Hungry Caterpillar are generally pure unadulterated joy, magic, and perhaps even perfection, with the final illustration, the beautiful and intensely coloured butterfly into which the erstwhile very hungry caterpillar morphs, being the ultimate icing on an already most delicious cake (and no food based pun is intended with this here allusion either).

This book was used by former first lady Barbara Bush as part of her campaign to promote literacy. [38] In 1999, the pizza restaurant Pizza Hut asked 50 U.S. governors to name their favorite books from childhood. The then-governor of Texas, George W. Bush, named The Very Hungry Caterpillar, despite having been of college age at the time of its publication. [2] Popular because of the 'collage' nature of the book, and the colourful illustrations, The Very Hungry Caterpillar can be a useful story to develop an understanding of the days of the week, food, and early maths skills in counting. It also portrays the life-cycle of butterflies, contributing to children’s learning aims of their Early Learning Goal of 'Understanding the World', which includes developing an understanding of natural processes, the nature of change, and the passage of time in general. FYI - Wrote this review ~2017 from memory as I want to have a review for everything I remember reading. If I messed it up, let me know! LOL :) a b Wiseman, Donna L. "Helping Children Take Early Steps Toward Reading and Writing." The Reading Teacher 37.4 (1984): 340-4. JSTOR. Web. This is a wonderful book for very young children. It introduces sound educational themes such as counting, the days of the week, foods, (although Saturday’s feast is a bit of a fantasy!) and the life cycle and transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. It is simple but accurate, and has been endorsed by the “Royal Entomological Society”.Molan, Erin (June 3, 2022). "Erin Molan: Storm over classic kids' books is diversity gone mad". By printing the instructions out and giving them to your children, they can practise following instructions independently. Alternatively, by projecting the instructions, your children can follow along together. Eric Carle wrote several children’s books about insects. Read them all – talk about what they have in common and what’s different in each. Have the children identify the main problem in each story (there’s a hint in each title) and how it’s resolved in the end. If you have to do something you do not like, do you do it right away or do you put it aside until you really need to do it?These twirling butterflies were inspired by an idea Amanda created for Make and Takes. Amanda’s children made ladybirds, but I think they’re also beautiful with a butterfly design, and the kids can paint, pattern or collage any design they choose. Why do we not like to do some things? Count the Fruits Worksheet The Very Hungry Caterpillar Counting Fruits Worksheet The Very Hungry Caterpillar Days of the Week Cutout Worksheet Explain to the students that while you are reading, they should listen for the following words: butterfly, chrysalis, eggs, and caterpillar. Nutrition: The caterpillar in this story eats a lot of food – some of it is very nutritious (like the fruits and the leaf) and some is “junk food.” Take this opportunity to talk to your students about what foods are good for you and what happens when you eat too much! It’s also a good time to talk about each child’s favorite foods. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was adapted for UK television on September 1, 1993. Once a caterpillar has disintegrated all of its tissues except for the imaginal discs, those discs use the protein-rich soup all around them to fuel the rapid cell division required to form the wings, antennae, legs, eyes, genitals and all the other features of an adult butterfly or moth. The imaginal disc for a fruit fly's wing, for example, might begin with only 50 cells and increase to more than 50,000 cells by the end of metamorphosis. Depending on the species, certain caterpillar muscles and sections of the nervous system are largely preserved in the adult butterfly. One study even suggests that moths remember what they learned in later stages of their lives as caterpillars. Counting on the Caterpillar". July 26, 2005. For the following five days, Monday through Friday, the very hungry caterpillar eats through an increasing quantity of fruit: one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, four strawberries on Thursday, and five oranges on Friday. Each day, however, the caterpillar is still hungry. On Saturday, he feasts on a picnic, and gets a stomachache from overeating later that night.
