Even just a year or two ago, I would have recommended a monitor that relies on a two-way signal between devices, rather than one that needs Wi-Fi or a strong phone signal. But now, with 5G being the standard, I am more inclined for monitors with phone apps. Many of them allow multiple people to log in and see what baby is up to, which is super reassuring for parents who might be away from the home and their baby.
This Leapfrog system, owned by VTech, has an excellent monitor if you don’t want to rely on Wi-Fi or a phone app – although it has both capabilities should you wish. It has the best standalone screen we tried, boasting a high-definition colour display even in total darkness, as if by magic. Unlike many of the others, it’s a touchscreen, which makes it super easy to operate and has a good battery life. However, if there is a chance that your signal isn’t strong enough, or will drop out regularly, then I would go old-school. Another point to remember is that if you are using your phone to monitor your baby, then you will need to charge it regularly and have it plugged in overnight. Range will be another major factor in finding the right monitor for you. You can either go for a model that uses a direct link between the camera and parent unit, or one that uses the home Wi-Fi, or in many cases, both. We found the range - the maximum working distance between the camera and parent unit - was seldom as far as advertised. Walls and floors reduce it, so the true range will depend on your home and the strength of your internet. If you have dodgy Wi-Fi, go for a monitor that can function without it. I can’t speak to this from experience, because thankfully this was never triggered with Jasper, but its reputation is excellent and it’s a great solution should your budget not stretch to its more expensive competitors.

I also love monitors that are easily moved, as opposed to mounted to the wall. It can either be mounted to the wall or positioned on a flat surface and includes a night light with a selection of soft colours. The nightlight, which we activate just before entering Jasper’s room, is soft and illuminates the wall behind the camera, instead of shining from the front, so it never disturbs him. The Nanit offers a really detailed analysis of the night, come morning, and the option to replay significant moments. This is a good value system that comes with everything you need from when your baby is little, but it’s also the only one we tested that doubles up as a tablet for toddlers, too. The five-inch touchscreen monitor, which is rimmed with a silicone bumper and is thus more durable than most, is preloaded with interactive videos, picture books narrated by ‘Hubble the Bear’ and simple games.
