But, aside from this, there are still plenty of shots when edges have been enhanced a touch further. When my kids were heavily into mythology in junior high I asked if they were shocked by Medea's story. It is true that Harryhausen approved the Criterion transfer but it is so long since I've seen it, myself, that I cannot remember how it looked - which only complicates the matter further. The handling of Medea is whitewashed from the mythology as I suppose it has to be for a "general audiences" film.

Hearing them excerpted before we get there is just as much a spoiler as giving away major plot points in a trailer. Don't get me started on the subsequent misery of Jason and Medea, a gory tragedy of domestic abuse and revenge.

But it's the skeleton battle from this film that is perhaps Harryhausen's pièce de résistance, which would later serve as Sam Raimi's inspiration for the legion of undead in ' Army of Darkness. There are so many truly terrific action and/or monster sequences/battles in this film – it's a genuine marvel just to look at them. Plus, we get a fine set of Original Storyboards for the Skeleton Sequence to see how well the film matches up to what Ray Harryhausen had in mind. Several day-for-night scenes have seen various interpretations over the years and in their respective releases, but one sequence, in particular, serves to highlight this quality best of all, and is renowned for not having had the right colour on DVD before. The skeleton battle found at the end of the film is easily one of cinema history's more memorable movie moments.

It's an amazingly entertaining track that details both the production and its impact on both cult audiences and filmmakers, including Peter Jackson. A selection of trailers includes one original British trailer -- it's on the poky side and doesn't emphasize the Dynamation effects enough -- and some trailers and TV spots from the 1975-'76 reissue. Jan Read and Beverley Cross's screenplay deals with the interplay of the Greek Gods by placing them in a gilded Olympus suggestive of a film blanc heaven. Use the thumbs up and thumbs down icons to agree or disagree that the title is similar to Jason and the Argonauts. The three minute sequence took a staggering four months to complete, and after nearly fifty years it's still a fitting grand finale to one of Ray Harryhausen's finest classics. You know, I completely lost track of this thread through last week being so busy but I have to mention that the day-for-night scene during the capture of the harpies *is* corrected on the Blu-ray release. The intrepid Jason leads the Argonauts on a quest for the fabled Golden Fleece during which he must brave all manner of dangers and face a host of terrifying foes - including the seven-headed Hydra, fighting skeletons, bloodthirsty Harpies and the invincible colossus, Talos.

Not having anybody to see this thing with, I took a bus into downtown San Bernardino at age eleven (boy, were those safer days for kids) and sat with my jaw in my lap for the entire show. Black levels here can be weaker, though I actually still found them to be sufficient, particularly in the sequences lacking sunlight with the harpies. Sony planned to go light on new extras until Ray Harryhausen's close associates took pains to lay down a pair of excellent commentaries. The man turns out to be Pelias, and though Jason is unaware of Pelias' true identity, Pelias knows exactly who his savior is and doesn't intend on giving up his kingdom. Will a pulse-pounding pace, bloody violence and lifelike computer-generated effects create a more real, tangible world filled with heart and emotion? For more about Jason and the Argonauts and the Jason and the Argonauts Blu-ray release, see Jason and the Argonauts Blu-ray Review published by Martin Liebman on July 14, 2010 where this Blu-ray release scored 4. Dismissed all too often for its screenplay, its acting and its outdated FX (“ahhh, doesn't it look quaint? You may also be justifiably intrigued by the teasing nuggets of what could be on the way from the Harryhausen archives and the fact that Jackson and his studio have been overseeing 4K transfers of such material of late.
