Shudder is celebrating the shark horror movie this summer with brand new Shudder Original Documentary Sharksploitation, which is swimming our way July 21, 2023. Directed by Rambo: Last Blood director Adrian Grünberg with Josh Lucas heading the cast. Joining him is Fernanda Urrejola ( Cry Macho), Raúl Méndez ( Sense8), and Julio Cesar Cedillo ( Sicario).

Oilman Paul Sturges’ idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory. There’s a clear anti-capitalist message at play here, though the thought behind it gets a little lost in the murk with other plot developments overshadowing the themes. At times it feels like too many plates are being spun for them all to perform equally, but the story did take a couple of directions I didn’t see coming, and that’s always appreciated. More could have been done with the visions idea, as other than a couple of jump scares and other minor moments, it never becomes all that relevant. I thoroughly enjoyed one moment with a detached eyeball, though. The climax is a little unsatisfying in that it’s easily second-guessed and thought around whilst it’s happening, but it works within the story that is being told. It has laid territorial claim to the nearby waters, fiercely safeguarding the environment against human encroachment. The shark’s aggression leads to a trail of death, and it repeatedly assaults the very structure of the oil rig, endangering its integrity. Exclusive: Galway Film Festival winners Andy & Ryan Tohill ( The Dig) are set to direct up and comers Levi Miller (Kraven the Hunter), Solly McLeod (star of upcoming ITV series Tom Jones), Isabella Pappas ( Finding Alice), Lou Llobell (Foundation), and Izuka Hoyle (Mary Queen of Scots) in Beach Boys. Scripted by Malachi Smyth, the film will be repped at the Cannes Market by Hyde Park International. Hokey as all that is, the cast commit to it all with evident sincerity, and the banter is nearly as entertaining as the periodic scary interludes; in the latter, stunt people descend into the inky drink to try to fix doodads and whatsits that could save the party, each time risking death by shark. The oil-soaked water probably helps hide a multitude of effects’ sins, as the budget looks pretty pinched. For a film of this type, though, this is pretty fun, and it’s nice to see that the teenage daughter gets to save the day via an understanding of the chemistry of nail polish.

The film follows the family of Paul Sturges (Josh Lucas) and his family who get stranded on an oil rig, which harbours the vengeance of a very angry Megalodon. The creature is believed to be a herald of an ancient Aztec god and kills the greedy.Oilman Paul Sturges’ (Lucas) idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory.

Pic takes place over one long summer night when a set of affluent students celebrate the end of term, clash with a group of local youths who’ve also hit the same beach to party. Rather than share a beach big enough for everyone, each side stakes absolute rights over it, leading to confrontation, violence, and ultimately tragedy for all.
