About this deal

Finish: the fruits and flowers last a medium length, with a pleasant warm slightly sweet peated and sherried ending.

The visitor center of Cardhu is opened all year, at high season from July to September even on Sundays. In October there uses to be maintenance. The visitor center is opened during that time but tours might not be offered during that time. Cardhu Whisky is known to be very smooth, balanced and silky. It’s got a sweet and fruity character with delicious mellow aromas. The shape of the bottle with its square form and the big closure was typical for Cardhu until it was also used from some other brands. Cardhu Single Malt Whisky is well known worldwide with a big presence in Spain and France. In 1899 the stills of Cardow were doubled and the distillery was connected to the railway buy building a new road. A decade ago, Cardhu was at the center of scotch’s first big supply flap. Although The Whiskey Reviewer has disproved the myth that whiskey around the world is suffering from a general and widespread supply crisis, the idea that rising international demand is putting a supply pinch on some whiskey brands is valid enough. Cardhu was just such a brand.

Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring seven working Speyside distilleries including Cardhu, a historic distillery ( Dallas Dhu, now a museum) and the Speyside Cooperage. According to a BBC article, "Cardhu is a Scotch that may taste familiar because it is used in Johnnie Walker’s blended whiskies". The flagship of Cardhu is the Cardhu 12 year old: smooth, sweet and malty with hints of pear drops and honey it is a nice every day dram and very popular as an entry-level single malt. On the palate, this is a liquid fruit salad with apples, pears, mandarin and green grapes. A hint of papaya and even some pineapple, upholstered with some ginger, lightly toasted oak and floral honey. Very quaffable, very summery, very approachable.Very sweet and mildly floral nose on citrus fruit, banana, apples and sweet malt. Some vanilla wafers and sultanas, a fruit salad with a mildly oaky touch. Very innocent but inviting at the same time.

The history of Cardhu - which was written Cardow in the beginning- is closely connected to the history of two women: Helen and Elisabeth Cummings. Helen and her husband John Cumming run a farm at Cardow in the late 18 th /early 19 th century. It is known that in 1816 John was convicted for distilling without official license three times. Distilling to small extends was usual for the farmers at that time and nearly no one cared for licenses. The just couldn’t afford it. At Cardow it wasn`t John but his wife Helen that distilled and she was known to have an eye on approaching excise officers and warn farmers in the neighborhood by setting up a red flag. Helen didn’t just only distill for their own needs, she also sold her Whisky from her kitchen’s window it is said.

Cardhu 12 Year Old Details

From 1982 to 2004 a “Cardhu Pure Highland Malt Scotch Whisky” was available and caused some confusion and a debate in the whisky industry: Diageo vatted Single Malts of several Speyside distilleries and bottled the malt with an equal bottle shape as the Cardhu Single Malt. This was a trigger for the Scotch Whisky Association SWA to work over the regulations and define the terms that describe categories like single malts or blended malts. Intro: I decided to buy a bottle of Cardhu 12 for several reasons: 1)I was curious about the separate flavour of a malt that served as a big component of the Johnnie Walker blends and that is not often encountered outside of them, 2)Jim Murray rated it at 90/100 pts in his current Whisky Bible, 3)I like both the name and the bottle art, and 4)the bottle was not expensive. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars.
