So now I'm supposed to believe that the author was his friend, knew Dahmer's inner demons, and there are even at times when he wonders if their bunch could have prevented Dahmer from committing his atrocious crimes? There are no excuses made for what Jeffrey Dahmer eventually became, just a sort of filling in the blanks of the timeline of his downward spiral into insanity . He's even Derf's first guess when he hears that someone from his high school class is a serial killer.

Derf maintains that Jeff is a "tragic figure," but only until he murders his first victim, Steven Hicks (just weeks after graduating from Revere).
