About this deal

This is a perfect ending to an epic, powerful, and informative journey through fantasy, science fiction, and history. Virtuoso and engaging Canadian duo – guitarist/bassist/keys player Kevin Comeau and singer/drummer Cody Bowles - fuse pomp, pop and rock on brilliant 2nd LP. Though this song may not have multiple time signatures, crazy guitar solos, or massive drum fills, it stands out as a superlative palate cleanser.

So much so, that it’s an album winging its way to me as I type, one that I cannot wait to add to my CD collection. As the vocals start, you are now fully enveloped into this science fiction story of a fantastical indigenous futurism concept. I’, which is a sumptuous prog rock track that continues where ‘Pt II’ left off, or maybe even acts as the prologue.Unfamiliar with the debut currently (although I will rectify this ASAP), the composition, in the words of drummer and vocalist Cody Bowles, “spans hundreds of years following our titular hero: Fearless after the events of (2021 single) ‘The Oracle. However, the myriad of clever ideas, interesting time signatures, and atmospheres means it keeps my attention each and every time I press play. Recorded at Universal's studio in Toronto with producer David Bottrill (Rush, Muse, Tool, Mastodon), Crown Lands' new album, Fearless, creates a world you want to spend time in. WE may be listening to two individuals for whom music is as essential to their being--to their every breath--as the aforementioned talents (both of whom I believe were conduits of the flow of a force from a source far greater than any corporeal human).

A power duo from Canada, Crown Lands play a style of progressive rock with classic rock and psychedelic leanings that would normally not even cross my mind to check out. The Shadow finally sees the band keeping distance from Rush (mostly) and resembling the Spell/Skullfist sound. I was very interested in this band upon hearing their name because I could guess they were Canadian. The fuzzed-up lead solo is infectious, and the sub-four-minute affair is over in the blink of an eye. Rather than clobber its audience with complexity, Fearless creates a world you want to spend time in.

It may not be my usual ‘thing’, but good music is good music, and ‘Fearless’ contains some sensational progressive rock music that is impossible to ignore. Also, they've done quite a remarkable job of stringing them together rather seamlessly while somehow making each and every theme interesting and enjoyable. The opening piano notes hint at something slightly different, a hint that is fully realised as the track develops. A-/five stars; a minor masterpiece of progressively-blended classic hard rock music--on a skill level that you rarely see achieved in the 21st Century.

smack in the middle of classic Rush or strays closer to Spell with some temporary deviations that sound like neither. Covering 2112 to Signals, the first stretch of this track is a textbook example of Rush's classic years. Dreamer of the Dawn" (4:03) a song that sounds a bit like GUNS 'N' ROSES with some RUSH basics, but as Cody's vocals and drumming go on I'm feeling that we're experiencing a new, though retro-oriented, sound. Thank goodness I’m not a betting man, though, because here I am with ‘Fearless’, the sophomore album from Crown Lands and I’m absolutely loving it.Add in other references from Wolfmother to Led Zeppelin, and many more in between, and I’d be betting my paltry wages on the fact that I’d probably have a listen to one song and then give up.
