About this deal

Next up was Aldi's Corale Baked Beans (45p/420g), with a score of 75%, which were declared the best value, with Which? saying: "Top marks for their appetising colour and texture. Although they didn't quite match up to Asda's beans on flavour, they're still a tasty option. These are the joint cheapest on test and offer excellent value for money." Beans are vegan-friendly and a good source of protein and fibre, with negligible fat content. Protein and fibre levels are similar across the brands, though Lidl's tin states there's more than 7g of fibre per 100g in their beans, which is considerably higher than the others. The make-up of the panel broadly represents the demographic profile of adults in the UK. Each brand of baked bean was assessed by 82 people. They are 'low sugar' according to NHS guidelines , but it comes down to how much you eat, and what you have them with. A full can of the most sugary beans on test (Lidl's) adds up to 19g – about four teaspoons of sugar.

Waitrose Essential Baked Beans - 76%. Came joint-second with Aldi. Rated well overall, especially in terms of texture. 40p for 400g tin (10p per 100g). Available from Waitrose. The texture was one of the best of the bunch, with good solid beans which were not at all mushy. Overall, the Aldi beans had a tasty, non artificial flavour, and were well-priced.M&S Baked Beans - 64%. These M&S beans underwhelmed out tasters. Over half found the sauce too thin and the beans overly hard. 35p for 400g tin. Available from M&S (in store) or Ocado. The "tasty tomato sauce" which coasted Asda's baked beans was surprising for all the wrong reasons. I was optimistic for this one but unfortunately I found they were coated in the familiar, somewhat artificial, sauce usually found in a tin of spaghetti hoops.

Do you have a Power of Attorney? MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis explains how this crucial protection works, why it's more important than a will, and how to get one in the latest episode of ITV's The Martin Lewis Money Show Live. While we are clearly obsessed with this beloved comfort food, many would argue there's not much that can beat a generous serving of beans on toast. This classic dish feels like home, stirring childhood memories of inhaling the dish in record time and inevitably spilling bean juice down your jumper in the process. With food prices rising and many households looking for ways to save cash, Asda's affordable Just Essentials range has proven a hit with customers in recent months. It was the cheapest of all the options I tried, and sadly the taste reflected that.

This is best made with dried beans. Haricot, also known as white beans, are usual in commercial versions, but you can, in fact, use whatever you happen to have to hand, from kidney to cannellini. If, however, you are really pushed for time, you can use drained tinned beans (three 400g tins should do it), though they tend to go a bit mushy if cooked again. 2 Soak and salt (yes, really) the beans

The panel of tasters put Asda Baked Beans (50p/410g) in overall top place, with a score of 77%. Which? declared them "a cut above all the rest for flavour," saying: ”Three-quarters of our tasters thought they had the perfect tomatoey taste. They were also some of the best rated beans for colour and sweetness.” NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Ulster Bank, which are all part of the NatWest Group, will now shut at least 172 of their bank branches in 2023 and 2024. Tesco Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (50p/420g) – 71% Which? said: "Which said: "The beans themselves were a good texture, but some thought the sauce too runny and most found the flavour too weak." Personally, I prefer my beans to have a stronger tomato flavour, but they were still quite tasty. They didn't blow my mind and make me realise what I've been missing all these years, but the flavour was decent and the small tin would make for handy lunch.

The size of the tins are the same but the weights of the beans we tested ranged from 400g up to 420g. Competition for the top spots was very tight, with several other budget-friendly supermarket beans coming in just behind our Best Buys.

Soak the beans overnight in a pot of water. Make sure the beans are covered by at least a couple of inches of water. Drain the beans and put them in a pot of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1 hour. Drain and reserved the bean liquid. Last on the list is Aldi. This supermarket has long been known as the enemy of the so-called "brand snobs" but over the years has managed to convert some shoppers thanks to its low prices.
